How often do the buses leave and how much do they cost? Can I just walk into a motel off the street or do I have to book? Where are the best markets in Chiang Rai?

Chiang Rai is my favourite place in the whole of Thailand!
You can either rent a motorbike, or take a bus from Chiang Mai.
It's a few hours through the mountains.

The night markets next to the Bus station are every night, and are the best (maybe only) markets in Chiang Rai. It's a small place with a lot of lovely people.

We stayed in the Baan Hua guesthouse which was literally 5mins from the bus station. Just down a bit from there is a great handmade leather goods place. I went partying a couple of nights with the owners brother and sister. They have stalls in the night markets too. I think it's called the 'Buddha corner'. They are really friendly.

Generally yeah, you can just walk in off the street, take a look around before deciding yes or no.

For bus...24 seats bus costs 900 Baht (takes 11 hours)
40 seats bus costs around 600 Baht
Most of the buses depart from Bangkok 7pm-9pm.

I think you don't have to book the hotel except it's high season coz of a lot of hotels there.

There's a night market in Chiang Rai but no so big...Chiang Mai is bigger. There is a very huge market at the border between Thailand and Myanmar..calles "Mae Sai"

I've heard it's quit boring there. Consider a day trip to Chiang Rai from Chiang Mai. You can get to Chiang Mai or even Chiang Rai from Mo Chit bus station in Bangkok or from Hua Lumphong train station in Bangkok, or even from Don Muang Airport if you want to take a short flight.

If you are leaving from Bangkok, buses leave every couple of hours. They are ver, very cheap. There is no need to book accommodation. As for markets, everything will be obvious to you when you arrive. PS: You should go to Chiang Mai first. It's a lot bigger and the night markets are excellent.
