I am a physician and also a type 1 diabetic for almost 10 years. I started on the pump about a year ago and I love it. It gives me the flexibility that I need to eat when I want. I feel like the pump has freed me of many of the daily burdens that injections had restricted me to (i.e. eating at certain times, working out at certain times, etc.) Not to mention you can take the pump off for up to an hour or more depending on your amount of physical activity. (please speak with your endocrinologist in depth about all medication issues).

Anyway, I have the Cosmo pump. I think that picking out a pump is like picking out a cell phone. They will all do the same basic function equally well, it's just a matter of "special" features and personal preference. As far as price the Deltec Cosmo pump is $5600 +the cost of supplies(maybe $100 or less every couple months all of which is covered by insurance). I have blue cross blue shield and they pay for 90% of the cost of your pump. That left me with $560 to pay out of pocket.

Unfortunately when I bought my pump I was still a student and not making any salary so I had the same dilemma you did. So I spoke with the "local" cosmo representative in my area and he made an arrangement with me - he had several pumps that had been returned to him from customers that upgraded. Any time you send a pump back to the company you get a $500 refund towards the purchase of a new pump. He simply sent an old pump and put the refund towards my purchase. Therby giving me a $500 credit. He said it was common in situations where the person can't afford the price of the pump. I would suggest speaking to a representative in your area. Just go to the website of the pump you are buying and call the customer service number and ask to speak with a sales person in your neighborhood.

I will also say that it DEFINATELY depends on your insurance - in general they average 80% of the cost of the pump. But it may range from 50% to 100%. Easiest thing to do is just go to the website and call the number, they will walk you through it and tell you EXACTLY how much will pay out of pocket BEFORE you committ to anything!!!

Best of luck to you, and here is a GREAT site for pump comparison!!! (http://www.diabetesnet.com)

I have a Medtronic MiniMed Paradigm 715 & I am planning to upgrade to the newer 722 that way I can use the new pump that checks your BS and reports the readings every 5 minutes.
I hope you have insurance for this it is very expencive!
Mine 4 years ago was $1599. Plus the tubing of $133 per 10 pack/ need 1-3 per week & the resiovoirs @ $35 per 10 pack need 1-3 per week and then there is the darn batteries! AAA needed every other day to every 3 days and you can't use the rechargeable ones.
It is the best feeling you can has as a diabetic to know you are in control, Just having a drip a second feels so good to your body.
Good Luck

Your best bet is to call 1-800-MINIMED and find out from a *real* diabetes educator regarding the types of pumps available and their costs - it does not cost you a dime to call! The costs will vary significantly based on the kind of insurance you have. Even if you don't have insurance, there are payment plans (third party financing) available.

Medtronic MiniMed has the leading market share (80%+) for insulin pumps in the United States.

Minimed Paradigm 515. Cost is unsure (I got a free upgrade from the 511). I started with the minimed 507C, which in 1999 was about $5,000. My upgrade to the Paradigm 511 was $500 (they used the old pump to cover that) and the free upgrade to the 515 was because I'm in med school, and I got lucky and ran into the reps for minimed, and they said they'd get me a free upgrade. Insurance-Very pricy, but they covered almost all of my pump expenses

I have a Medtronic MiniMed Paradigm 715. I love it and highly reccomend it. It's greatly changed my life. It was quite spendy...$7000 I believe, but insurance payed for a large portion of it. You should check with your insurance company. Also..my clinic let me use a trial pump w/ saline..something to look into. Good Luck!

My pump is the paradigm 511. It is the old model but i absolutely love it. When i got mine my insurance covered the whole thing. You should probably look into your insurance and see what they cover. You should try to get the newer model because it has alot more to offer. I believe that mine cost around $7,500.00 (i think, not sure) but the mini med paradigm series is really great.

The OmniPod sounds exciting - i take advantage of the Minimed Paradigm. that's a standalone pump with tubing. i like it because of the fact i'm able to disconnect it whilst mandatory and it basically leaves the little infusion set in me. It additionally has the non-provide up Glucose monitoring gadget for you to purchase one by one (coverage is gradually commencing as much as conceal it) that exams your BG's each and every 15 min. And the pump would be programmed for a sort of issues, and has a bolus calculator (i think the OmniPod does, too? Or is it less complicated?).
