I only have about $5k to spend on our wedding. Should we use our beautiful scaped 3 acres of land and cater it our selves...? Expecting about 100 people and have about 1 year to plan it.

I am a great cook, so is my wife...(to be) I figured that I could order the food online (beef and such). I'm a carpenter, so I will build the "u" table. I own all the DJ equipment and I'll do beer & wine "on the house" & mixed drinks $4 each. I'll hire a bar tender and maybe even a cook from a local pub to man the 8' grill. I don't want to worry about chewy beef or raw fish! Thanks for the great tips!

Charging for mixed drinks is absolutly fine! No different then going to a hall and having a cash bar. Atleast the beer and wine will be on the house. The price for the mixed drinks is to simply pay for the liquor. Even at $2 or $3 for a mixed drink, no one will think it's tacky. We have a large Italian family, so every one will most likley be trashed on wine...I will be serving Primerib or Haddock for the guests and burgers & chicken for the kiddies. Best friend is a butcher and he said he'd get me the beef for 50% less then retail.
Thanks for the tips! Keep'em comming

I say go ahead and use your own land but do not cater it yourself. By the time your wedding comes, you will be so busy and there will be too many things going on for you to worry about all the little details that catering consists of. There is nothing wrong with that, and depending on what type of food you plan on serving, you can probably just get a few friends to do it for you (unless you have a barbecue). Otherwise honey, I say focus on your special day and leave the cooking to someone else.

Having your wedding catered would be a great idea. However, you and wife cooking wouldn't be. The two of you are going to be so busy with dressing for the wedding (especially her), greeting guests, and taking pictures that cooking will be a major stress that you don't want on your wedding day.
Charging for mixed drinks is perfectly acceptable at a banquet hall so long as beer and wine are offered complimentary. A lot of people have beer and wine receptions. But not at a bar that is provided by the couple in a backyard. Guests will expect that to be free. It's one thing to pay a bar for drinks, its another to pay the hosts of the party.

That is a horrible idea to be charging the people that you invite to your house for the drinks. You should just eliminate hard liquor if you can not afford to give it to them. Everyone will be offended if they have to pay for something at a wedding when they already brought a gift. I would not be cooking any food yourself either unless you can get it all done a few days before. If you live in the USA try going to costco and getting all your stuff. You can even buy all your liquor there really cheap. You don't have to be a member to buy hard liquor there. But they do have good food that you could use.

If you can cook, you can try but keep in mind one very important thing - you are going to be very busy the day of the wedding! Do you have the time to dedicate to set up and preparing the food in the week ahead of the wedding? You certainly could use your 3 acres of land - I'm sure it would look amazing. If you think you can handle all the catering as well as having your wedding day, go ahead but it will add to your stress level.
Based on the additional info given:
Definitely go ahead with this. Since you're planning to have help the day of and you're getting deals from friends, you'll definitely be able to save some money by catering it yourself. Best of luck and congratulations.

oh god!! NO!!! Im getting married in 3 months Im ready to pull my hair out already. I hand made all my decorations, bouquets and even wanted to do my own wedding cake! By the time 4 months past already from doing this, i rather have used the money and went to a spa!! haha Like me and my fiance, we are going to stuff two houses into one, so we have everything that we need. Find you some very nice platters, plates, bowls, etc, and ask people to bring a covered dish. You'll be surprised what you'll get when family pulls together, especially if one or the other has a big family, Then everyone cant' complain because they all chipped in and its their own food!!
GOOD LUCK

How does your wife feel about this? I would plan everything in detail, and hand over the command to someone you trust on that day. There is going to be alot of things going on that night, and you want to be able to enjoy it. A BBQ would be perfect at your home. Catering companies charge way too much, so maybe put an ad in the paper and check out their background. I used to work at an eldery facility and the Food Service Director did catering on the side. He was used to serving over 100 people at one time, so he knew how to time everything.
Congrats and Good luck

What type of reception are you planning on? formal or informal? If you plan a sit down dinner.no no no. You will have your hands full!!!! I would have informal and it simple. Or you could do a "COOK-OUT" theme. Let everyone come in comfort clothes. A friend of mine did that just a few weeks ago. What fun!!! Salads and and everything could be done ahead of time. All you have to do is have someone "Man the grill (or grills)". It's less expensive and your guest can relax and EVERYONE can have a good time!!! Best Wishes!!!! Hope I help.

Be careful not to over book yourself..... there's going to be alot of responsibility on you that day, so you may want to get a team of family and friends who don't mind doing it, but that you COMPLETELY trust, so you won't have huge worries that day. Also, if you do use that approach, make sure it's a group that isn't the wedding party or very close relatives, they as well as you and your new wife will want to relax and enjoy the day..... catering a wedding is ALOT of work!

Honey I'm all for pinching a penny. And it sounds all well and good but arn't you gonna have your hands full with everything else? If you decide to I wish you all the best. I think the location absoluetly 3 acres is great. Cooking yourself.... That's a bit much.
