I hear that even on airliners you can get kosher meals by asking in advance.

Shakia, you are right . I don't know crap about today's military but I served in a sort of Army Air Force during wwii, the 7th Air Force under Gen. Curt LeMay. Back then I suspect that any of us who even suggested special food - let-alone "demanded' same would have been laughed-at. That, by no means, means that today's military are a bunch of sissies. Thanks for the info, responders. I would re-up if they'd let me. Yeah, right!

Love the answers your getting beegee, but as an old AF Lifer (retired - and damned proud of it too) I would have to say no. The military serves excellent food but I'm afraid Kosher is out. They are only allowed a certain amount of money for each person eating in the Chow Hall (opp's they are called Dining Halls now or were when I retired) and I'm afraid the cost of Kosher would exceed the limits they are allowed. I don't know if they allow cooking in the barracks as it is really a fire hazzard situation so your on your own as far as purchasing your own chow. By the way, if you were in WWII, I would say your chances of re-uping are out the window. Don't think you'd like the changes anyhow.

Okay, obviously you don't know crap about the military. That's okay. Yes, you can...if its part of your religion they have to concede to it. Plus, after your training....YOU CAN COOK YOUR OWN FOOD!!!!!!! People in the military don't always live in open bay dorms with little to no privacy. Only during 13 weeks of training. Then the rest of the 4 or 6 or 10 or 20 YEARS you sign up......YOU LIVE ON YOUR OWN. Unless of course you go to war. But even then you can still eat Kosher.

The answer to your question is yes. The mess halls have been set up to do this for awhile due to religious reasons. A few years ago they came out with MREs that are kosher. One of the reasons for this was due to the Persian Gulf War when we had thousands of Moslem prisoners of war who received MREs with pork product in them who did not eat pork for religious reasons which caused us a lot of issues with the prisoners and the Red Cross who fielded the complaints from the prisoners.

Has anyone had any experience with ordering kosher food through the local commissary? I’ve heard that most commissaries can arrange to stock specialty items if requested, but the few times I’ve spoken with commissary managers they were not very helpful.
If anyone has any suggestions or experiences, please post them here. Aside from my own use, I would like to compose some kind of story that will help out others to do this.

I don't think that they would keep 2 kitchens, 1 regular and 1 kosher, but who knows; maybe a blessing by a Rabbi will do the trick on the "cuff"....

it would all depend on who you have in charge. if you talk to someone at your training camp they'll probably just make fun of you but once you get past basic training you can probably speak to who ever is in charge and tehy will try to make accomidations for you. and as for MRE's just try and get something that you can eat b/c they're all different
