I have gone through my life with just a first and last name and I am the only one in the entire United States with that name. That is why I question it.

i dont really know why those are around but i guess to give them a sense of individuality. but not everyone has one. my sister doesnt. =]

You make it sound like it is something they just started doing Parents have been giving middle names forever...It is a way to name a child after a grandparent or someone in your life

Its a more detailed form of identification than just 2 names. For my children, my husband and I both pick a name we like. Then we order them according to what sounds best. We both get a name we like, and our child has a wonderfully picked name without arguement. I only know 1 person without a middle name. He likes it that way, but I like the added security (legally) of a middle name.

Thats how it goes. My mom never had one so when she got married to my dad they moved her maiden name over and now she has a middle name. I have a middle name. My name's Michelle Alice.... I was supposed to be Alice Marie because Alice is my Grandma's name and my mom wanted to name me after her. But my dad's mom was jealous so I got it as a middle name. I have a guy friend who doesn't have a middle name. He's the only one I know that doesn't have one. He tricked me into telling mine and then i didn't believe that he didn't have one. He brought his birth certificate to school the next week. His mom wanted to kill him. Haha. I dont think the question of why they are, but why are they giving their kids suuuch strange names. Seriously. Who wants the name Apple?? Thats just ridiculous.

I only met one person in my life without a middle name...I thought it was the thing to do.Why did your parents NOT give you a middle name?That my friend is the bigger question.

because if not too many people would have the exact same name, also because they have middle names. and sometimes because they can't decide on which name to use. that question has way too many answers.

Whats wrong with middle names ? I have one ,my daughter has two middle names.
Its always been that way ,at times its a family name that is passed down from child to child,any way what do you find wrong with having a middle name...details please

THAT STARTED A LONG TIME AGO! SOME PEOPLE USE THE MIDDLE NAME TO NAME THE CHILD AFTER SOMEONE ELSE. I KNOW I DID.
