The question is, can you stand up to pressure from your family and friends?Believe me, I deal with this sort of thing all the time, and I been veggie for three-and-a-half years.I still get asked by certain family members if I'm still vegetarian(it's like they're expecting me to drop it like a short-lived fad); others conveniently "forget" that I'm veg, and a number of them certainly do not provide something I can eat when they invite me for a meal. And of course, there are the ones who want to pick an argument with me.Still, I remain vegetarian. If you really believe in your choice, you'll make it.It can be depressing and hurtful the way people close to you sometimes act, so it helps to develop a thick skin.I'm happy with my veggie lifestyle despite all the petty aggravations.

Eventually, you will move out of the family house and lead your own life. You can make vegetarian friends, plenty of veggie people in college. Learn jokes about being vegetarian, tell them to meat eaters. Sarcastically thank them for their support. Read books. Get support online. Don't be discouraged. I was vegetarian for a few months at age 13 and then gave it up. I went veg again at 20 and haven't looked back. My husband went veg with me (somewhat after me, he still wanted fast food until I showed him you could get a Whopper with no meat at Burger King). Our son is now 10 and was raised vegetarian.

why do people do the whole vegitarian thing? If you don't have a good answer, you can't expect people to think it makes any sense. Personally , most reasons I hear from people, especially the animal cruelty excuse just doesn't hold up, but maybe yours does. If it is such a struggle to not eat meat and your worried whetehr you "can do it", why are you trying in the first place? You make it sound as if not eating meat is some sort of great achievment we should all be working for.

I`m a one too. First my mom who is a vegetarian herself told me not to do that becoz I`m still growing up. But after 6 - 7 months everybody forgot that I`m a vegetarian.

Only in family gatherings they had to remeber that I`m a vegetarian and cook some thing extra for me. That`s it. That is the nature of mankind. They get so excited of other matters if they think that is no good or not neccessary they will do anything to stop you. But don`t loose your courage and serender yourself.

If you quit then they will point their fingers at you saying "na na na We told you, you can`t stick to your own resolutions, ha ha ha '

But don`t let them discourage you. It takes time to beat their attitudes but later it worth the effort.

So my friend GOOD LUCK. and WELCOME to our world.

You'll feel more confident if you can determine their concerns and do some research. Become an expert. There are veg sites that offer comebacks to pretty much any heckling you get. Me, I'd be careful of the company I keep.

The jokes will go away soon, I got it for a few months too. They are just afriad of things they arent used to. Keep it up.

I recommend you educate yourself everything you need to know about it and educate them about it. Tell them the pros of being a vegetarian and I bet they will be suprised, might possibly become one themselves.

Good luck.

my family is the same way. my dad can't wait for the day when i say i want to eat some chicken... his side of the family is that way... very rural, but in a suburban-ish way. so, guess what. it's your body, you can do whatever you want to it. you shouldn't do something b/c they don't think you can't. being a veggie is something that is very hard for people. and i took me a long time to become one b/c of my family. so i just said screw it. and my family, they just don't listen me... so. i have to get everything for myself. just, do whatever you want. if you need a friend you can just email me at neptooncat@aol.com.
