People don't like to have their "intellectual territory" threatened any more than they like to have their physical territory threatened.

Geesh people, "preached to" does not always mean by a person of the cloth or a priestly type person. You can be preached to by a mother, lover, husband, wife, neighbor, doctor, the guy you backed into at Walmart and many more.
This is it - people do not like being preached to because it makes them feel as though they are less than perfect. It puts them on the defensive. I can't think of many people that walk away feeling enlightened after being preached to. Now on the other hand if you talk "with" a person people tend to respond better.

Because they spent the first 16+ years of their lives trying to avoid being educated, and why would they want to start allowing it now?
People never like being talked AT. It means the one talking is not actually including them in what is said. It is the height of bad manners.
People like being talked WITH. It is much more friendly because they then get to participate and don't feel alienated from what is said.
I try not to preach TO people. Can't always help it on here though. Sometimes it seems that's what I am doing but I can't exactly hold a two way conversation here can I?

For some people they just don't want to hear it. So many people who profess to be a certain way or believe in a certain faith, or live a certain life tend to be contradicting themselves. They say one thing yet do another. We live in a day and age where people want to see with their eyes that you are what you preach before you can say anything to them. Of course if God tells you to say it, then you had better listen. But for the most part just be an example. People are more willing to listen when you prove you are what you preach and that you hold no judgment.

If you aren't of the same spiritual bent, being preached to is
basically having somone tell you "You are wrong and you
are less of person because of it."
It really is the same as if people tell you to vote one way when
you are already voting another. You tend to resent it if they
become really really insistant on it.
And of course, the more effective a preacher is with his own
audience, the more insistant he appears to someone that
hasn't already drunk the Kool Aid.
I almost struck out that last reference as being tacky and
mocking religion, but then decided to leave it in - its important
to note that charismatic enough leaders have caused people
to do some pretty obviously stupid things.
If you don't happen to agree with the preacher, it can start
to feel like you're being forced to drink the Kool Aid.
If you don't recognize the reference, go to Google and
look up "Jonestown massacre".

Hi Emma,
This is just my guess, but I think that it is because they are not hearing the true gospel, and deep down inside, they know it. Let me explain. Jesus, came to our world to bring a message of profound hope to our race. It was simple, and elegant: "The Kingdom of God, is within you". Unfortunately, this message has been lost in the confusion of man made religions. When we come to God as humble children, and invite Him into our hearts, He sends His Spirit into us, and bonds with us. We become new creatures, part mortal, part Immortal. The old values of materialism and fear, fall away. Love and Wisdom, become the foundation of all our choices. We have embarked on the Path of Eternity, and we will never be the same again. That, is the Gospel of Truth, but you will not hear it being preached in any church. The traditions of men, have replaced the Word of God. I have found, that if you have the Indwelling Spirit guiding your life, that this gospel, will be reflected in all of your activities, and people are drawn to it on their own. When God's love shines out of you, people naturally open up to seek it for themselves. When preachers become more occupied with loving God's potential children, instead of "growing" their churches, they won't have room for the people who will come. This will not happen, until they experience Spiritual Rebirth. Very few have, unfortunately.

ohm'slaw is correct.. u have to set an example by following what u are preaching, maybe that's when ppl will actually see and understand. Why they dint like to be preached.. well that's cos in todays world each got his own way of looking at things. It most definitely could be very stupid and naive way of thinking, but try changing it .. and ull come back to the same conclusion again.... ppl dint like being preached to...

The word of God is like a mirror to a lost sinner's soul. None of them like to look at themselves, and be forced to look at their fony image they want others to see of them. It scares a non believer, when the word of God forces them to see the sin they commit. Most people dont' realize that the uglilness of sin can be seen in a mirror.
You can actually put a non believer next to a christian and let them talk about anything and leave out christianity all together, and a stranger can pick out who is Christian and who isn't with in a minute of listening to them talk.
Once a non believer acknowledges that they are sinners, it forces them to do somethng about it, and they dont' want to. what a non beleiver doesn't want to admit, is that they are already controlled by satan and they belong to him 100%, And that the only way to break those chains of bondage to satan, is for them to accept Jesus as their Savior, and repent of their sins. They do not want to give up their sinful life styles as well.
Hearing the word of God, convicts their heart into taking a good look at themselves, and they hate what they see. If they dont' look at it, they dont' have to deal with it. At least that is the lie they believe that is told to them by satan. But they dont' have to worry for long. because, eventually God will stop knocking at their hearts door.
Luke 9:5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

We're all free to make up out own minds and not have someone force thier opinions and beliefs upon us.

Maybe when they are being preached to or talked to they are being comvicted of things they have done wrong and are not yet ready to here this or deal with it. I do not know but I know that at times I feel like our minister is talking straight to me so I must need to change something or seek forgiveness for it.
