Have been told they smell like sweaty underwears etc.
I think i've gotten past the gagging stage and now I pretty much enjoy it. It has an unique taste and flavour.
There are many different types of durian some more bittersweet, some sweet and some as bland and hard as a raw potato believe me that's awful (sold unripe).
Word of caution : never eat it if you're going out or meeting someone.
Some people tend to have increased body heat after eating but there is a practice i.e. to drink lightly salted water from the emptied durian shell as it contains something to prevent the heat buildup and so.
However bad it smells, just tell yourself --> its just a fruit.

The smell resembles a petrol station... but I had no problem getting past that to taste the fruit and various products made from it.
Of course, your best bet is to get fresh durian... then the scent is not so strong or obnoxious.
Durian ice cream is quite good, by the way.
I'd like to just say that although I liked the taste of durian, it is by no means my favorite fruit. Nonetheless, it can be quite good depending on how fresh and how it is prepared!

Oh great! I'm in asia and we can see durians almost every street here. Hmm, D24 are the durians which are famous to be the tastiest of all. And they sell by weighing the shell.. oh man.
I don't really like 'em, but whenever there are good durians, i think i'll still eat them. It smell awful when u trap them in your car, but if u eat them...hMmm.. not bad actually.
Give it a try!

First off, it is very hard getting past the smell. I always likened it to smelling a dish rag that has begun to smell bad.. After getting past the smell which I did once - I didn't like the taste of the fruit either! It must be an acquired taste!

I can't get past the smell. I've tried to eat both frozen and fresh, and I just can't get past the smell. Sorry - I WAN'T to try it, but.....yeesh. It even LOOKS gross. They're kind of hard to find in the US too - they're only available at the larger Asian markets so finding fresh is nearly impossible.

I bought one at the Asian market near my home to try it. I didn't care for it enough to buy another one in the future.
