Were you wearing THAT dress at the time?

I've been vegetarian for most of my life, I made the decision because I don't feel like I could kill an animal with my own hands, so I don't think I have the right to eat meat.
To all those who do eat meat and are too squeamish to go in an abattoir, get real.
It's painful and it's messy for any animal to end up on your plate.

I don't have any problem with anyone eating meat if they can stomach to watch the process first.

When I was a kid (8-14) my parents used to breed dogs, and we fed them on tripe. I used to go to the abattoir with my dad to collect them. We'd go into the slaughterhouse and take the tripes away in black bin liners. They were always still covered in partially digested grass, and frequently they were still steaming.

My abiding memory of the place was the smell. Don't let anyone tell you that blood is odourless. In large quantities, it stinks. I always remember wearing my wellies because of the bloody water pouring out (they hose down the meat to remove blood and any gooey bits which are still clinging on). Slaughterhouses are not pleasant places.

That having been said, I don't think I could become a vegetarian. I like the taste of meat too much. I believe that the majority of animals bred for meat in this country are killed humanely (the jury's still out on halal for me, I'm not sure slitting an animal's throat and letting them bleed to death is peaceful), and have a reasonably good life until slaughter.

this is what really happens to animals... they a brutally masacred (well... that was a bit much). but anyways.... if you become a veggie, less animals will have to endure such a deth, and less people have to witness the horrible aftermath (such as yourself). i am not telling you become a vegetarian, it's your body. if you want to become one, great, if you don't that's great too. b/c being a vegetarian people are very prejustice against us. so, you will have to go through a lot of crap for the rest of your life, but a least you know that you haven't eaten anything that has given brith to another living creature, or anything like that.
i can't tell you what to do, but i have been to a very old slaughter house, before i was a veggie, and now, i am glad i am one. just make a pro con list. check your doctor, go to a lot of veggie websites beforehand. and have a great life whatever your decission is.

No I haven't but I've seen film and pictures where they have the carcases split open, with their guts spilling out, using a jet wash to rinse away the blood.

My mom used to work for one, in the office area. She said the men who killed the animals got used to it after awhile. Try not to think about it too much when you're eating. Going veggie may help you a lot. You won't feel guilty for eating the animals.

The only slaughter house I have ever been in, is the Chicago, Cook County Jail. It was quite enough.

When I was about 20, me and a mate crept into 1 at night (it was in operation). I will never forget the smell, and the noise of those poor cows. Sent a chill down my spine.

Yes, I used to be a gravedigger too! Once you realise the worms are going feed off you any naive veggy tendencies tend to get dropped.
Mother Nature? Its just one big plate with everything living on it and eating off it.
