to Gothbabe: potato chips are "vegetarian" so being a vegetarian doesn't necessarily make you "healthy", which is a myth!

I've been a strict vegetarian (and vegan) for about 15 years. I've always kept it to myself and will only tell ppl if I have to b/c of the negativity some ppl have towards vegetarianism. I say to each his/her own, I don't go around preaching anything b/c I think that gets you nowhere. If someone asks me about my beliefs in a sincere manner, then I am willing to discuss them. The killing of animals for food greatly disturbs me and I don't like to talk about it to ppl wish to attack me for my beliefs. Having said that, of course I would love it if everyone turned to vegetarianism. Here are just a few reasons even if you don't feel empathy towards animals:

"It takes about 2,500 gallons of water to produce a single pound of meat. According to Newsweek, "The water that goes into a 1,000 pound steer could float a destroyer." In contrast, it takes only 25 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat."

"The world's cattle alone (not including other livestock) consume food enough for 8.7 billion people. Over a hundred million of tons of grain go to animals while only 5 million tons of grain could adequately feed the 15 million children throughout the world who starve to death every year. By feeding grain to livestock, we lose 90% of the protein, 96% of the calories, 99% of its carbohydrates, and 100% of the fiber."

"A meat-eating American needs 3-1/4 acres of cultivated farm land per year; vegetarians only require 1/6 acre per year."

"Trees are being cut at an alarming rate to clear land for meat production. If tomorrow people in the U.S. switched to vegetarian,, 200 million acres could be returned to forest."

"U.S. livestock produces 20 times the excrement of the human population.Their waste no longer serves to fertilize pastures a little at a time, since they spend much or all of their lives in factory sheds or feedlots. Wastes are often simply flushed away dangerously raising ammonia and nitrate levels in our drinking water. Going vegetarian helps to clean up our nation's water more than any other single action."

I don't think that everyone should be a vegetarian. Some people are too stupid to eat right as a veggie. I think that it would be best if everyone knew about factory farms and if they wanted meat, they would eat animal who were treated well, had been fed food that was appropriate to their species and had been killed cleanly. I would like people to pay for the pleasure of their meat the true cost, not the government subsidized cheaper than soy burgers price. (Beef would be $90/lb. The rich who could afford it could also afford their bypass surgery. Also, it would spur the cottage industry of small farms raising beef on grass in sunshine). I would also like the meat eaters to know about the poor countries who export beef instead of using cropland to feed their own starving citizens.

In a perfect world, yes. There are so many reasons a vegan diet could benefit mankind, even if your not going to do it for the animals. Its a wise decision to make for your health. Most people aren't aware of whats really in the food that they eat. The impact that animals raised for food have on the environment is also surprising. If we freed up land that is being used for livestock to grazed and use it to instead grown grains, fruits, and veggies....(and also didn't have to use some much grain to feed livestock) it would be a big help towards ending world hunger. To those of you who disagree with me, that's ok. Your entitled to your own opinion

Well there are "true vegetarians" who are essentially "vegan" .... if you know the history of the word vegan at least what they say in the history books~ is that it came about because of the "CONfused VEGETARIAN".

I think that there are a lot of misCONceptions on what TRUE vegetarianism or VEGANism is all about.... www.whatisvegan.20fr.com

I do believe in VEGAN LAW, murder is murder...and murder is wrong. I would not want to be murdered, would you?

I am a vegan and I think everyone should make his own decision. I can't force anyone to become a vegan, too. It would be good if there were more vegans, but it is not my issue to decide what other people do.

Medical science has established that a vegetarian diet is healthier than a non vegetarian diet. But you don't have to believe it - especially if you are not a vegetarian. I am a vegetarian, but when I look at my non vegetarian friends, I sometimes wonder.
Elephants are vegetarians, but they are stronger than most carnivores.

This is a good question, and one that many individuals as well as organizations have dedicated websites too.

Personally, I think yes. And I would point you to the Vegan Outreach website as they've elaborated it much more succintly then I ever could.

In my opinion yes but, I don't have the right to shove it on someone. With friends I tell them how I feel and they respect that most of the time. I doit for the same reason everybody else does for animals, myself, and spiritual reasons. For me it is the best way of life.

I'm a vegitarian, i think most people should b a vegitarian cause the world might b a lot healthier than sitting eatting potato chips with extra salt on them and being lazy and get strokes or they could croak cause of what they eat all the time that's not healthy for them.
