Speaking from an Australian perspective and at a managerial level. The biggest threat (internal) is that there is a critical employee shortage. I do not say skill shortage, but there is definatley not enough staff to go around. This occurs at both a line staff level and at supervisory level.

External threats at present include, legislation, taxation, terrorism threat and in my state new anti smoking and tougher Responsible service of alcohol laws and guidelines.

Opportunities within the industry include a more savvy guest mix- people whom are discerning and know how to judge good service, that domestic tourism is strong and room rates remain high. I could go on and on.
