Basset, the clap (gonorrhea) is actually detected with a urine test or genital swab.

A Pap smear checks for the presence of irregular cervical cells. These irregular cells are often a result of infection with HPV, so the diagnosis is kinda of by induction: if there are irregular cells, then HPV might be present. A second test (PCR) may be done to look for HPV DNA, confirming the diagnosis. Otherwise, your doctor will continue to wait it out to see if anything else develops (although the doc may perform a colposcopy to remove the irregular cells).

A Pap smear will not test for STDs beyond that point. HOWEVER, many clinicians will swab for chlamydia and gonorrhea while doing the Pap. These tests are done separately, but the samples are collected at the same time. not all clinicials do this, so ASK if you will be tested for chlamydia and/or gonorrhea. The CDC recommends that all women 25 and under who are sexually active get screened annually for chlamydia and gonorrhea with their Pap smears.

There are other STDs, though. HIV can be tested via blood sample or oral swab. Syphilis and herpes are blood tests.

Pap Smear is the single, most effective test for detecting pre-malignant and malignant conditions of the cervix. This is the main reason Pap Smears are performed and in some cases, the only thing reported on. Pap smears can also detect HPV (Human Papilloma Virus, thought to be a contributing factor in cervical cancer and Candida (yeast) infection.

A Pap Smear is a poor test for bacterial vaginitis, trichonais and Chlamydia.

A Pap Smear is not a test for AIDS. A Pap Smear is not a test for ovarian, uterine or breast cancer (although during the course of the exam, the doctor will physically check you for signs of these.) A Pap Smear is not a test for herpes, gonorrhea or syphilis

HPV, but it must be specifically tested for. Other than that no a PAP does not detect STD's.

Above answer is incorrect, the clap is detected thru a blood test.

yes many std's including some of the most common ones such as hpv and chlamydia can be detected by a pap smear - others (like aids) require a blood test.
previous poster (basset...) is incorrect - pap tests do detect std's - that is part of why they do them.
