This is what a ticket agent said to my wife in San Diego last night even though they had 12 or 13 empty seats they would not allow my wife to fly without purchasing another seat, and then if no one used it they would give her a refund. They would not give her a refund there but she would have to wait for 10 to 14 days to recieve it. She was there with our 3 year old child and had to stay in a hotel, which we didnt have money for. We did get help from another source and she did get on a flight this morning but isnt that discrimination esp. when my daughter who was with her at teh airport said another women on the same flight who was large told them she refuse to pay and then they said ok. Who can we complain to? Help us please.

the only person that was sitting next to her was my three year old son and the plane still had 13 empty seats. And if a person gets on the plane that is "handicapped" they dont always have to pay. She also stated that she would keep the arm down until the plane went up and share my sons seat with him so she would not have bothered another passenger.

Upon my wifes return to St Louis she told us that they did not offer her a seat belt extention nor did they ask or look to see if she needed one. She wore no seat belt the entire trip.

That is f'd up! Me and my brother (who weighs 450) took a flight to mexico with US airways so he could get a lapband surgery and I sat beside him...He took up about 2/3 of my seat but hey I didnt mind! They gave him and extension to his seat belt. Im sorry people can be so rude...My brother is a big big guy and he is the best person in the world. Im sorry I didnt really answer your question..I dont know who to ask...Good luck!
Oh yeah..it was lucky I was sitting beside him and not a stranger ...bless his heart.

Overweight passengers are costing the airlines millions in added fuel costs, according to a report published last fall in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
Portly passengers should take notice. Your costs, too, might rise. If you can't fit between the armrests, you might be buying an extra seat. Southwest Airlines has had the armrest rule for 24 years, but has enforced it only recently. US Airways, Northwest and America West airlines can require overweight passengers to pay for two seats, but very rarely do.
AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
A Los Angeles Superior Court has dismissed the case of an overweight woman who had accused Southwest Airlines of harassment when she was asked to purchase a second aircraft seat so as not to inconvenience passengers seated beside her.
The woman weighs about 136kg (21 stone/300 pounds) according to court papers, and also claimed that she was discriminated against because of her size.
The incident occurred in May on a flight from Reno to Burbank when the woman was asked as she boarded whether she required a seat belt extension, and was then apparently asked to buy a second ticket. A friend however bought the seat next to her and the woman was able to sit in one seat with the arm rest down with 'another person seated next to her in a comfortable position', The Associated Press reported.
The lawsuit was dismissed however when the presiding judge stated that the carrier's policy of requiring overweight and other passengers to purchase extra seats to avoid inconvenience to others was neither illegal nor discriminatory according to Reuters.

I saw this on the news several months ago, that if a passenger is too big to sit in 1 seat, they will charge them for 2 seats.
It is now the policy of some airlines....

nobody , the airline is a business , if i were to sit next to somebody extremely fat i would be very upset and expect a refund . you have to understand they are in the customer service business and letting her on the flight with only one seat is bad business . Now if there were really extra seats that was just wrong . What is sad is that your child had to see that

If your wife is too fat to fit into one seat comfortably then the airline has every right to ask you to pay for a 2nd seat. Because your wife is overweight, why does she get to take up two seats?
It would be the same as denying someone a seat on a roller coaster for being too fat.
If you dont fit you dont fit.
I dont think its discrimination.
I dont know who would you complain to other than the airline....

The problem is not with the airlines, or movie theaters, or concert venues. The problem is with fat people. Why should you make other people suffer for you. Don't get me wrong but it's your problem why shouldn't you pay for it. I have paid good money for my seat why should I have to share it with your overflowing body. I think everyone should be made to pay for what they use.
