Latest national guidelines say 5.0cm or an increase in >1cm/year. So next year if it is 3.9 cm, that is an indication to have surgery. This, however, is a general guideline and may also depend on your body size; very small thin people often have smaller vessels and therefore have a lower threshold for surgical intervention. Furthermore, people with other "co-morbidities", like high choloesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc...are often considered high risk and may be considered for surgery before an otherwise healthy person.

Please do not take my word for this and speak with a VASCULAR surgeon about this. Either way, you should DEFINATELY control your BLOOD PRESSURE first and foremost, as well as stopping smoking, drink only in moderation, exercise and eat well.

The other answers that say 5cm are right on with the guys I work with. Avoiding things that will stimulate the growth are the next thing to consider. Really tight blood pressure control and a lifestyle that will make it rise. Right now, airport security would rank right up there with stress induced hypertension...that along with political commentator! Those guys never let up! I'm a big proponent of nutritional supplementation but not everyone agrees. Are you already on some blood pressure medications? Are they working well? Hope this helps. Jeff the nurse in Nashville.

usually surgery is suggested when it reaches 5.0. however, should yours increase dramatically no matter what the size it is cause for concern. also blood pressure is of major importance and a med possibly needed to maintain correct pressure. keep monitoring as often as your md thinks necessary, at least annually.

Trust your surgeon, but I've often heard that as long as it's under 5 cm surgery isn't considered

Or they just wait until it bursts, if you have good insurance. They make more money that way.
