I have been a vegetarian since I was approximately 13, and I seem to remember it being because of a television programme about the slaughter of animals.

A couple of things made me go vegetarian. One reason that really struck me was looking at my neighbors leg, she suffered from artherosclerosis (clogged veins and arteries) you could see the veins popping up under her skin....
Other than health reasons the moral reasons were important to me, such as not killing animals for our own survival, humans don't need animal protein to survive, we don't have claws or fangs to devour animals raw....I turned veggie when I was 9 and now im 26 and in the best of health.

Hi - I turned veggie when I was about 16 (24 years ago now!!). Like you the final crunch came when I watched a TV programme featuring an abattoir. I had always been a BIG animal lover and would never eat anything too animal like. So from the minute I saw that programme I stopped eating meat. I have also raised four little veggie offspring!!

I've only been a vegetarian for about two weeks, but I love it and feel fabulous. I saw the documentary "Earthlings" (which is available on Google video) and it made me reconsider what I had been eating all these years and the unbelievable cruelty caused by large corporate slaughterhouses and the meat industry. I've done a lot of research and the health benefits are superb when one does vegetarianism properly as well.

I think that for most Vegetarians the reason they switched to this better diet is healthy diet and/or animal cruelty reasons. Nowadays, there are so many delicious vegetarian foods at retailers and even restaurants are becoming more vegetarian (at least in some parts of the country, and the world).

BTW, you can find a lot of vegetarian recipes on Culinary Chef at http://www.culinarychef.com

I turned veggie when I was 9 because I went to a dairy farm, as a school visit, and a nasty farmer showed us the cutest little calves and said 'There's you Sunday dinner!'
After huge arguments with my mum, she let me stop eating meat, but not fish (I hate people who eat fish and say they are vegetarian, they are NOT).
When I was about 11 I stopped fish too, but still had a great diet with lots of veg, beans, pulses, grain etc.
A few years ago (I'm giving away my age!) in my early 20's I decided to start eating some meat again, I now eat fish about once a week and meat about the same although I always make sure it is organic, free range, humanely killed etc - it costs a fortune but is worth it!

In my case, there's nothing philosophical about it...I grew up with a large vegetable garden, my mother canned and froze food for the winter. I just acquired a preference for fresh veg and fruit over meat. I feel better in myself when I eat vegetarian. But since it's not a philosophical thing, I do eat what I'm given when I go to friends houses.

I don't eat red meat but I do eat fish and chicken, not a vegetarian but if I were it wouldn't be because of the slaughter of animals it would be because of all the leather shoes, bags and coats, sofas, chairs and leather in general, I know so many vegetarians who condemn the slaughter of animals but wear leather, isn't that just as bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually it all started for me at around 12 years of age. After I watched "Faces of Death" in which a poor little monkey get clubbed on the head so these idiots could EAT HIS BRAIN, It made me so sick!

Recently I read "Diet For a New America" by John Robbins, which discusses farm life, slaughterhouses, animal intelligence, etc... It catapulted me into veganism, but only for a few months, I couldn't give up cheese!

Since i was about 5 ive been a vegetarian, its not the animal thing that made me choose to be veggie (although it is nasty), its the taste and texture of the meat that i dot like, mainly the texture.

When I first turned veggie, it was for my health-I used to be sick all the time, particularly in winter. The animal rights thing came later, when I began reading about factory farms. It had been brewing for a while, though, ever since the time one of my sisters had a sadistic boyfriend who used to brag about what he would do to some of those cattle at the livestock place in my town.He filled me with revulsion.
