Tacos are Mexican food, while burritos were invented in California. Burritos are cylindrical, while tacos are D-shaped. But ultimately the difference is one of scale and portability.

In southern Mexico, corn tortillas are about the diameter of the palm of your hand. When these are stuffed, rolled and fried, they are called taquitos or flautas. When only filled and served soft, they are called tacos and eaten by folding the tortilla in half tightly. Northern Mexico prefers flour tortillas about the diameter of your hand. In both these places, a taco filling is usually limited to one or two ingredients.

As the Northern Mexican flour tortilla migrated to the US, the flour tortilla began to grow, finally stabilizing to about a foot's diameter. This is very likely a reflection of the comparable prosperity many Mexican families found in the US. By the same token, the filling of a burrito ( literally "pack mule" ) eschews the simplicity of a Mexican taco, instead employing an everything-but-the-kitchensink philosophy.

And as a final Americanization, there is the fact that Mexican tacos are not really built to travel. They are meant to be enjoyed as soon as they are prepared ( there are exceptions, of course, all of which grow more prevalent the further north you go in Mexico ) , and they can be messy if eaten on the go. Burritos, on the other hand, are sealed at both ends to lock in juices, so they can be eaten while on the go.

Tacos can be flour or corn tortillas and either fried cripsy or soft. Burritos started as flour tortillas folded and sealed at both ends to make it more portable for ranchers in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Burritos are ALWAYS flour tortillas, whereas a taco can be either. In the U.S. tacos are usually smaller and don't have a lot of ingredients - and the ingredients are added to the heated or cold tortilla. Burritos are stuffed, folded, then heated. Chimichangas are fried burritos.

Ima Troll, don't call other people dumb asses if you look like a dumb *** yourself. How about spell check?... A taco doesn't have to be hard shelled for it to be a taco- That's americanized. You obviously have never been in Mexico, where the authentic tacos are. Also, you mean ground beef, not hamburger- A hamburger is a food item made with hamburger buns and ground beef patty, to say the least. You know, like in Mc Donald's. Capisce?

A taco is a folded or rolled corn torilla stuffed with meat or beans, etc, and a burrito is a rolled-up fat flour tortilla stuffed with meat, beans, etc. A taco is authentic Mexican, a burrito is Tex-Mex.
