Type 1 usually occurs during adolesence but it can happen at any age. Sorry to here that this has happened to you.

People often get type 1 and type 2 confused because the media often talks about the weight issues that contribute to type 2 diabetes but neglect to say "type 2".

There's actually quite a big difference.

Type 2 or Diabetes Mellitus, obesity related diabetes, or adult-onset diabetes) is a metabolic disorder that is primarily characterized by insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency, and hyperglycemia. It is presently incurable but it can be controlled with weight loss and proper diet.

Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disease which is caused by genetic predisposition. For some reason, yet unknown, the body attacks the pancreas and eventually "kills" it so that no insulin is produced.
Type 1 Diabetics must take insulin which is the hormone that the pancreas makes. They also must control their carb intake and closely monitor blood glucose levels.

Contrary to some myths, type 1 Diabetes isn't cause by eating too many sweets.

Be sure to check out the American Diabetes Association website because they give a lot of good information and tips on self care. It's at http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp

Because with so many people over weight that is the type everyone sees. I'm type 1 also. Diagnosed when I was 7. Now I've had a baby and gained lots of weight. Everyone just assumes that I'm type 2. It really sucks. I even had someone ask me why I didn't just eat better, so I wouldn't have to take insulin. They didn't realize, (til I told them) that I would die without it regardless.

There is only about 1 million people that have type 1. It doesn't get much publicity. Type 2 is considered an epidemic and gets all the news. I hate it. I've had type 1 since I was 6 yrs old and everytime I tell someone that, I have to explain the difference. It sucks!

I know your feeling. I was diagnosed at 15 with type 1 and no one understands the difference. I wish people were more knowledgeable. Type 1 is so different from type 2.

Well saying TYPE 1 is saying that the problem started in the pancreas and in the amount of insulin that got lower and lower.

Saying type 2 is meaning a problem that began with lack of response to insulin.

And yes, it is ignorance.

My sister told me it was because I don't pray enough! or I don't walk in the light or something like that! People that don't share the same disease try to put there two cents in all the time. I don't bother with them any more.
Im a type 1 and had it went I was 15.
