There are many cultures other than "rednecks" that actually still eat possum... but also let it be known that possums (if given the opportunity) would eat you as well. Possums are not very particular with their diet and I've heard reports that possums will eat corpses.

With all the deer and wild hogs running around my place I'm too busy eating venison and pig to bother with the possums, armadillos, squirrels, raccoons, and various types of snakes that inhabit my chunk of forest .
However, I certainly know people who eat all such wildlife.
Then again, although I live in a house in the woods, I have three doctoral level degrees so maybe I don't qualify as a redneck.

The people who eat possum don't like to be called rednecks. However some people do eat possum meat. It is very greasy and has a strong gamy?? taste. My grandmother used to eat it and she loved it I never was made to eat or taste it.

I don't know about rednecks, but I've talk to alot of southern people of all races and they said they have eaten it. I've never tried it myself but have eaten raccoon and it was very good.
