Yes it is a paella type dish. It can have a variety of ingredients in it (whatever is on hand) but classically jambalaya has andouille sausage, shrimp, onions, celery, bell peppers, garlic, tomatoes, bay leaf, thyme, CAYENNE PEPPER, rice and Cajun/Creole seasonings. Each cook adds to and takes away from this basic formula. Chicken bits can even be added, if some is available. It is a good dish for family or company.

It is not paella. Paella is just seafood, and the spices are totally different.
The word itself a combination of the French "jambon" meaning ham, the French article "à la" meaning "in the style of" and "ya", thought by some to be of West African origin meaning rice. Basically it is a hodgepodge of different meats in rice.
You use Andouille sausage and chicken, then add vegetables and tomatoes to cook, then add seafood, adding rice and stock at the end.

It's a Cajun/Creole dish, usually made with shrimp, chicken, Andouille sausage, and rice with a tomato base and lots of cayenne pepper. Some folks put crawfish in it too. Very popular in the Louisiana bayou region.

It's Creole vegetable soup, basically. What sets it apart from others is that it contains okra, a veggie most popular in the South. It can contain shrimp or sausage and is preferably spicy. Delicious! A New Orleans specialty.
