It was a disposable lancet that poped down and still had a top I had to twist off. Can you get HIV from it? There was no blood on it, but I don't know if lancet's have air-tight holes.

I'm picturing the disposable lancets used in pens to take blood sugar samples in home diabetes testing. Most brands are guaranteed sterile if the protective disk is sealed to the base.

(Yes, I'm a med student.)

If you had to twist the top off then it wasnt used yet, it wasnt contaminated with blood then its probably fine...why do you ask? Did you touch someone elses lancet,or was it yours? All lancets are disposable, you twist the top off then put it in the lancet device and dispose of it after you've poked yourself with it.

No, you cannot get HIV from a lancet in this instance. It absolutely has to be contaminated with the blood of an HIV pos person. The HIV virus does not survive on surfaces.
