I wish somebody would put up a sign defining vegitarian and vegan but, we are nearly the same as far as belifes go on our eating habits I will stay this way till the day I die probably I was raised around meat eaters and another thing you don't really get as much protien out of meat every one has installed in this opinion of reasons to not do it.. oh well everyone is a critic but, my side is meat=murder in any form or fashion. The next time you see someone eating it just think of what that animal was doing about a week ago and the cruelty of what it went through being killed.

Response to BRIGHT EYES... actually, that's not true .. the human body is NOT meant to eat meat.
Human teeth are designed for grinding (seeds, nuts, berries, legumes, plant material). Similar to horses, giraffes, and other vegetarian animals, the largest percentage of tooth used is flat, perfect for grinding. The human digestive tract is very long and allows the digestive juices to break down those edibles over a longer period of time (1-2 days), which in turn allows us to absorb more of the nutrients.
On the other hand, canines (dogs, wolves, etc) and felines (domestic and wild cats) have extremely sharp teeth designed to (sorry about this) rip flesh and meat. Their digestive tracts are short .. they take the nutrients from the food and eliminate the rest in a very short time (probably a few hours)
So when a human eats meat, and it begins the journey through the long, long human intestinal tract, what you have is actually partially digested meat sitting in your intestines for more than a day. And anything the animal ate is now going through you, so the sulfa drugs and unregulated antibiotics used by ranchers in the feed is now being absorbed by your system. Is it any wonder that we have so many new diseases, such high rates of cancers, etc? (I'm not trying to be overly graphic but if you think about what's happening while you're digesting your food, you'll start to visualize why a vegetarian diet is more suitable for humans)
As for the original question:
I feel much better when I'm on a vegetarian diet, but I do have problems with anemia. But I've found a wonderful approach in a book called "Eat Right 4 (for) your Type". It's a diet that pays attention to your blood type, because each blood type reacts differently to food as it breaks down into stuff we can use.
For years I would wake up during the night with a clawing feeling in my stomach, and I assumed it was hunger pains. I'd get a quick something from the fridge, usually a piece of bread with peanut butter. But it didn't ease the pain. I later discovered that for my blood type (AB+), too much wheat will cause stomach pains. VOILA! Mystery solved. That's just one example... by following this method of choosing foods, I'm hoping to get back to a veggie diet very soon!
And yes, it IS possible to live on this kind of diet but you have to pay very close attention to balancing your foods on your plate. There are some excellent references on the web... Good luck!

I am a vegetarian and have been for almost 8 years now. I sometimes eat eggs though. I hope to become a Vegan. Becoming a vegetarian was not a difficult transaction for me but I'm having hard time turning Vegan. It seems everything I like to eat has eggs and diary products. Right now, I have started to use soy milk instead of using milk.

That's what I've been doing for over 12 years now and I'll continue the rest of my life! Becoming vegetarian was an easy transition for me and I don't have any regrets.
BTW, some vegetarians do eat eggs.

Actually, to be a vegan, you also exclude dairy products. Vegans eat pasta, bread, rice, fruits, vegetables, nuts, lentils, seeds, beans, and soy products. There are also great vegan substitutes for many dairy proucts, like sour cream and cream cheese. There is plenty to eat on a vegan diet. You just have to be willing to try new things! :-)

I could live on sweets...:-) expecially chocolate.
Living on a tight budget here so vegetarian by chance, not by choice, and I'm not sure how long I can continue this.
The story someone listed about sulfa drugs was interesting, maybe good news not bad.
I can say that the breath smells sweeter when you don't eat meat.

I would never go back to eating meat now. You suddenly begin to realize that your body doesn't need to eat meat. Our society has just grained it into our minds that we somehow cannot function without eating meat.
I have never felt healthier nor have I ever felt better about all the animals I am saving

um, dairy is not vegetarian, since it comes from an animal-- and for those who say that dairy at least doesn't hurt taking it from the animal, that is not true because the poor animal has to keep getting pregnant over and over in order to keep producing the dairy that makes the milk, cheese and yogurt products, also the milk is meant for their babies, not for us, we make our own milk for our own babies. u can have soy for the protein, and u can have rice and other whole grains like pasta with ur veggies and beans, unless u are allergic to grains and soy
