As a male Guai Loh (that's "white foreign barbarian" to you non-Cantonese in the audience), what's the best way to impress potential Chinese inlaws who want their precious jade blossom to marry a Chinese guy: 1) cook a home style meal in a wok for them; or 2) take them out to a very upscale, high-priced Mandarin restaurant? [Chinese-American princesses please identify yourselves, so we can factor in the appropriate bias; shih-shih!]

Cantonese here.. my dad is an excellent cook, he doesn't like anyone to be in the kitchen when he is preparing the meals and he compares... and pick on my cooking too! If you are confident to prepare a family style Chinese dinner to your guests, I guess you are a good cook. I wish you won't get jealous from your potential Chinese father-in-law because you cook better than him! (hehehe! I'm kidding! But some fathers get jealous to their potential son-in-laws, right?)

OK.. back to your question, I think both would be nice and if I were you, I firstly would bring them to a nice Chinese restaurant and observe how they react to the food and you would know what they like and what they don't like. In that case you can pretty relax and show them how sophiscated you are + how much you know about Chinese cuisine (from ordering Chinese tea till all the way to the desserts). Traditional Chinese families still think men don't have to be good at cooking (the kitchen is women's playground!), you may surprise them a lot.

After you have known what they like or dislike, I suggest you to prepare a home party to impress them. Show them how organized you are + you can cook as well as a very friendly person (good husband / good father image).

Wish you good luck.

Sushi is Japanese but it's a popular food item -- it sells -- so many Chinese buffets offer it. Some chefs offer a type of food called Asian Fusion. Clue: A building contractor who designs restaurant interiors once told us that if you wonder who is running a restaurant that sells sushi, look at the lighting. If the lighting in the restaurant is dim, then it's a Japanese-owned restaurant. If the lighting is bright, it's Chinese-owned. Serious, he really said that.

Home style is the way to go...they are going to want to know what YOU will be preparing for their daughter, not what a restaurant can do.
