At this time, very little is known about how or when people become infected with HPV. There is research being done to answer some of these questions. What we do know is that HPV is mainly spread through sexual contact. Women may be exposed to HPV and not develop dysplasia or genital warts for many years. Both men and women can be infected with the virus and not know it.

Just to be clear....if you are with a partner who has HPV virus but may or may not have visible warts, you are at risk of also contracting the virus and if you do contract it, you may or may not have visible signs (warts)....it all depends on your immune system. Most people are carriers of the virus and do not have any physical signs; this is why it is the number 1 std in the country!

Yes. My first serious bf had been sexually active with lots of other girls. A couple weeks after we broke up, he had given me genital warts because they had laid dormant in his body for a while. If you do get the warts, they can be removed(thank God!). I had to go into a clinic two different times and get my warts burnt off.
