What you are probably describing is herpes 1 or oral herpes. There are two types of herpes 1, the oral type and herpes 2, the genital type. In most cases, people get oral herpes 1 during childhood during casual contact with infected individuals(ie parent that has herpes 1). The reason why the virus is received during childhood is that a child's immune system isn't as well functioning as that of adults.

It's not genital herpes. There are several types of herpes. Although, genital herpes and oral herpes are caused by the same virus (herpes simplex), even children are afflicted with oral herpes, so it's obviously not always transmitted sexually. The virus is very infectious, so you possibly could have gotten it from kissing someone, or what not. Most people are infected with at least 1 herpes type before adulthood. Don't worry, it's not that bad.

Ruthie is right about the nasty mouth thing, also, if you kissed someone who has genital herpes and they had a sore, or any kind of bleeding in the mouth you can get genital herpes in your mouth. Cold sores generally do not go into the mouth, but it may be possible if you have a severe outbreak. You could also have gotten it by putting your hands, or your partners hands in your mouth after touching the affected area. I work in a laboratory and this is somewhat common.

The herpes you no doubt have in your mouth is not genital herpes. There are a number of different kinds of herpes.

You can have oral herpes; you get it from kissing or drinking after someone. You might have been unfortunate enough to have kissed someone who doesn't have good oral hygiene and who had oral sex with someone previous to kissing you.
