Diane D gets my vote. Stress can do this as well. If your blood sugar remains elevated (above 240) for 24 hours you need to call your Dr. He may prescribe sliding scale insulin. If your blood sugar isn't brought back down to normal values you remain sick longer. Some anti diabetic meds do not cause hypoglycemia, ie Glucophage or Metformin(generic name). These types of meds you should still take unless it causes stomach upset. 300 mg/dL is a rather high reading but not lethal. Watch for symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), such as abdominal pain, vomiting, rapid breathing, fruity-smelling breath, or severe drowsiness or symptoms of dehydration, such as a dry mouth and very yellow or dark urine. Weigh yourself and check your temperature, breathing rate, and pulse frequently if your blood sugar is higher than 300 mg/dL. If you are losing weight and your temperature, breathing rate, and pulse are increasing, contact a health professional. You may be getting worse.

All Diabetics need a sick day plan. We tend to have very high BS when we get sick or overly stressed.
Talk to your doctor or PA and have a plan in place BEFORE you get sick next time. Doses of insulin and even type 2 meds are conpletely changed when sick, you have to worry on top of the sickness itself about ketones building up in your system. The other thing you have to worry about is not dehyrating by vomiting, high fever or sweating or just not drinking enough liquids. Keep the fevers down and the liquids high, unless you are a dialysis patient then you must call your doctor ASAP for instructions, more that likely you would have to stay in the hospital for a few days if on dialysis.
Take care & Good Luck

I don't know why that happens, but when I get a slight cold, flu or whatever my sugar goes up. And I also try to take sugar free cough syrup. It's a little more expensive than the regular kind, though.

Are you diabetic? It rises because your immune system is in hyper active mode trying to fight off the flu. Sugar (glucose) is your body's energy source. Your body is supplying itself with extra energy so you can fight off the virus.

Also, when you don't eat, (believe it or not), your sugar goes up.... sometimes beyond the point where it would normally go if you were eating normally. Again, your body is over compensating for lack of energy coming in.

Yes it can.

Any illness can throw "normal" reading into space at times only because your body's immune system is reacting by under/over compensating the virus.

My brother had the flu and he literally had a blood readings that should have spelled death. He survived and everything when back to normal

Blood sugar can rise when you are ill because of the effect of high amounts of cortisone on the blood sugar. Cortisone rises when you are sick or injured and causes the blood sugar to rise even if you don't eat.

The liver responds to any stress on the body by dumping sugar into the bloodstream.

Yes anytime a diabetic vomits they need to look for key tones by meter or urine strip. My son went into ICU because he puked from 3 am until 6am and was almost dead. Sick days get special treatment hope you got a good plan
