People do not need to wait for 3 months...
Pcr test, this actually checks for the hiv in the body. It is the most expensive test of all. Least amount of time to detect hiv is 10 days.
P24 Antigen test, checks for the antigen or protein as some say, which is present very few weeks of infection.
Antibody test , searches for antibodies, the average days for antibodies to be detected is 22 days...alot of people would have seroconverted after the 1st month.
You said he, so he is (presumely hiv-) the risks are reduced, it dfoes carry some risks as well as some other std's as well.

I believe HIV can take up to 10 years to show up. but be tested every 6 months just to be safe
