This is called a diabetic neuropathy. Normally sugar levels in the blood stream shouldn't be above 130 mg/dL, but when you have diabetes and you don't control it this tends to be the norm instead of being a rare exception.

The problem here is that constant high blood sugar level damages everywhere on your body, blood vessels, kidneys and for you question on the nervous tissue.

Since sugar is basically eating away those nerve endings they transmit mixed messages to but it in a simple way think of it as a short circuit so that's why you feel the pinching or stinging sensations more often than not, these start in your feet, so if you are already experiencing these symptoms go to your Dr ASAP, if you don't sooner or later you will loose all sensitivity in your feet

Neuropathy. I don't think that they feel that bugs are stinging them, but more like there are bugs crawling all over them.

I have type 2. I sometimes feel it in my lower legs and feet. I believe it's a circulation issue. You should ask your doctor what, if anything, can be done about it. Since it doesn't bother me often, I haven't addressed it with my doctor. Good luck!
