I heard a rumor that cold sores (herpes) can be passed on just by having normal (not oral) sex. That's not true, is it? As long as there's no kissing, it should be safe, right?

You can have intercourse during a cold sore outbreak. The herpes virus can be transmitted from mouth to genitals, but genital-to-genital contact is safe.

Correct, you can transmit oral (simplex 1) to the genitals. Or give genital herpes (simplex 2) to the mouth. Open sores spead the virus. And viruses have no known cure.

i'm pretty sure that the virus can only be passed when you have an active lesion. if you have an open sore, then you shouldn't be kissing, etc. don't be spreading the fluid from the open sore.
