If you want "classic" 80s, you have 2 ways to go...preppy or punk.

The preppy party was full of 50s-type snobbery. You'd have little tea cups or a punchbowl with red punch. We did NOT do little sandwiches, but we did do sitdown dinners or buffets. Every woman wore a Polo shirt (by Izod or Ralph Lauren only!) with a strand of pearls. There was no such thing as "shabby chic"...it was ALL chic and nothing shabby.

The alternative (and MUCH more fun) was to go Punk. These were before the days of 'grunge', but they were fun. There was a lot of makeup and everyone dressed in black. Women had Madonna hair and men had Robert Downey Jr/Rob Lowe hair. Food at a Punk party was served out of sinks and toilets (new, of course) and it was all the kind of stuff that you could use for a good food fight. One of the best parties I went to had all the fixings for tacos in a variety of "disgusting" containers (refried beans in a toilet were awesome) and they were all laid out across a bartop. Everyone ate with their fingers and it was a blast.

Preppy parties are much easier and you do hors d'oeuvres and the such. But Punk parties are much more memorable.

BTW, if you're doing alcohol, the staple for parties back then was "Whoppatooee" (whop a 2 ee). Basically a trash can with red Kool Aid or Hawaiian punch and then everyone brought their own alcohol and it all got mixed together. Vile and disgusting stuff, but we drank a ton of it. Just don't let anyone bring anything "mint"....ewwwwww.

The food was the sameand there wasn't anything really distinctive like say the 50s or 60s. I think it kind of depends on how old the guests were in the 80s. If everybody was in college then serve college food. Pizza, tacos, guacamole, cokes that sort of thing. Deviled eggs are good no matter what the party.

Regardless of what you serve its the way you present it that will make the diffence. At most dollar store you can fine coka cola plastic cups. These were popular in the 80's. I dont know how many you have to feed but Egg rolls are a great finger food and the great kung fu flicks are often assosiated with that time. You can make about 40 egg rolls for about $15. heres how.
Brown 2 lbs of ground pork
season your pork with Black peper soy sauce and minced garlic
add 2 bags of cold slaw mix to you frying pan (lettice and carrots)
cook until the veggies are limp
and then follow dirctions on egg roll wraper pack from there. you will need two packes of egg roll wraper.

You will need lots of color for your deserts too. I sugest regular angel food cup cakes with vinila iceing but use food coloring to make the icing diffent colors. each cupcake cak be diffent. hope this helps

O yea dont forget fortune cookies

We haven't changed that much. You could do classic microwave foods such as Gino's pizza rolls, etc. Then coke classic or a flavored drink (orange soda). For dessert, how about ice cream cake (that's SO 80s).

for dessert: m&ms. take out all the red and blue ones!

you may also consider manwich, rice a roni, ...think of food commercials from the 80's. kraft mac n cheese...

OR

watch a typical 80's movie like 16 candles or better off dead and prepare what they are eating in one of the scenes.

that sounds like fun!

Fondue is a hit, my mom was a big party planner in the 80's and there was always fondue, and she has so many sets and hasn't used them since. They are even lime green!

I think fondue was very popular then. You can do cheese and chocolate with foods to dip in them. You can do a hot oil and cook thin strops of meat with dips at the table.
