are you sure it was an INSULIN level of 38.9? If so, then it's a bit high. would mean your body is producing more insulin than needed. Might mean insulin resistance or maybe a tumor producing insulin. SEE the endocrinologist. She or he will be much better at determining what's going on than your doc. If you really meant a blood sugar of 38.9, then that is very low -- hypoglycemia! again -- endocrinologist -- go!

I just went back and looked at some of the previous answers. Many of them are from supposedly well-meaning people who have no idea what they are talking about! Please follow your doctor's advise and see the endocrinologist!

Insulin levels in the blood are directly related to the levels of sugar in the blood, 38.9 could be completely normal if associated with a blood sugar of less than 70 but above 50, or totally out of whack if associated with a blood sugar over 150, you need to have your endocrinologist explain the process to you.

FIRST: are your Insulin levels or your Glucose levels at 38.9? I think it's your glucose levels, which means your sugar levels in your blood are too low. Normal levels are 70 to 150 mg/dl, lower in the morning before you eat, and higher after you eat, but they should never be lower than 70 when fasting or higher than 150 after you eat.

My father is an Endocrinologist in Brasil, hence I have some knowledge in this medical area. YES, go to an Endocrinologist. Low Blood Sugar may means you are PRE-DIABETIC.

IMPORTANT: Try to read a bit about LOW BLOOD SUGAR levels, so you can also ask questions to your doctor. Doctor's tend to not tell everything, so you have to ASK in order to know more. ASK, ASK, ASK, you have the right.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to ask my Dad.

That is considered a low blood sugar my daughter is a diabetic and that is low Im not sure with hypoglycemia what they do to treat it but youll probly just have to make sure you eat on a schedule so you dont get the low blood sugars and yes low blood sugars can cause death if you dont catch it my daughters blood sugar was down to 23 before and that was scarry. she is a type 1 diabetic she gets insulin shots because her blood sugar can get up in the 600's that is dangerous too so that is why she is on insulin, but if she gets too much insulin or does not eat she gets the low blood sugars. Hope everything works out for you.

I think you may mean a blood sugar level of 38.9. I didn't realize you could get that low and still be conscious. Hmmm... hypoglycemia is just that: low blood sugar. It means your body is producing too much insulin, which can be dangerous. You need a certain amount of sugar in the cells to operate normall. An endocrinologist is exactly who you need, they specialize in the endocrine system: pancreas, kidneys, liver, etc. All those organs have something to do with the chemicals in your body. Your body isn't regulating its chemicals properly, and you will most likely need medication to regulate blood sugar and insulin. Don't listen to those morons telling you that you are going to die. You are not going to die, be thankful that you were referred to an endocrinologist early, my poor boyfriend endured blood sugar levels of 400-500 before his idiot doctor referred him to an endocrinologist, she saw him one day, and now he's much much better! :) If you have questions, check out www.diabetes.org, it's the American Diabetic Association's official web site. Good luck, God Bless!

Whatever may be the meaning of your doc's action, I would first of all suggest you to be relaxed. Medical conditions are best tackled only if you try to remain positive in your life. I've seen people making a hell out of it due to their negative approach. Everyone is gonna have some kind of body organ failure at the moment of demise. So, take in stride if something goes wrong with your present day physique. Try to listen how body is complaining about something. Just smile and say "OK, I'm gonna live with you the way you like". Just follow the medical procedures and you will lead a very decent life, even if a medical condition comes haunting your way now.

May god bless you!

The methods for measuring are different in USA and Europe, 38.9 could mean a bunch of different things, you have not given enough information. If you have any diabetic tendencies you must see and endocrinologist

Hypoglycemia is more commonly called low blood sugar, and it means that your blood is not carrying the proper amount of energy to your cells to maintain good health - or sometimes even consciousness. At an insulin level that low, you are at risk of passing out.

An endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in regulating the levels of hormones and enzymes in your body. They are probably going to prescribe drugs and/or lifestyle changes, depending on how bad your diabetes is.

For more information, go to the American Diabetes Association at http://www.diabetes.org and check out their FAQs pages.

why didn't you ask your doctor while you were there? He's there to answer your questions. 38.9 means that your sugar is waaaaaaaaaaay to high. Average is about 5-6. It could be diabetes. The endo will make tests on your pancreas so see what's wrong with it. Probably it can't eliminate sugar properly.
