I was tested positive for herpes almost a year ago and since then have never experienced any type of symptom. Is it possible that there was a misdiagnosis or am I just still living in denial?

It's always possible, but then again it's possible you do have the virus and just don't show any signs of it.

I have talked to people who have the virus for 10 years and have never had an outbreak. It's rare to not show signs or symptoms of the virus if you have it, like an outbreak, but it's possible. Some people can get 10 or more outbreaks a year, some get one every few years, while others get no outbreaks.

If you are really concerned about it, go to a different doctor and have them test you for it.

I read an article a few years ago in a magazine about a girl that was misdiagnosed. She was told she was positive for the Herpes virus after she had what appeared to be an outbreak. She went on to tell future partners and she got dumped over and over again, only to finally get rechecked years later with a much different result.

I think so. My friend's boyfriend went for a check up and he came back positive for Herpes. Then when he went back for a follow up, they said it was negative. And he never had an outbreak!!! How weird is that? But he said the doctor told him that we all have a little of the virus in us and that is why it may come up positive at times. I could understand that...have you ever had a cold soar? You know the ones that come out on your lip in the winter and you buy all the blistex in the world to remove it? Well that cold soar is a form of herpes and maybe that is why it is in your system and testing can be inconclusive or false.

Yes, it's possible that any disease can be misdiagnosed, but it's pretty rare. Your herpes could be in some type of remission, so I'd confirm this 'diagnosis' with your doctor. It wouldn't hurt to get tested again.

Sure, anything can be misdiagnosed. This is very unlikely, however. Herpes can be spread by someone who isn't or who hasn't experienced any active outbreaks. It is possible that you are in a remission. Stress can bring on an outbreak, as so can the sun, both natural & tanning beds, also menstruation can cause one. So please be safe.

Genital herpes cannot be cured. Once infected, the virus stays in the body for the rest of the individual's life
Research suggests that the virus can be transmitted even when there are no symptoms present, so that a sexual partner without obvious genital herpes sores may still transmit the illness. In fact, asymptomatic spread may actually contribute more to the spread of genital herpes than do active sores.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.
