Asthma has no cure, just sympton control. As your son is 8, purberty may help with his symptons. Both my kids have asthma. One started at 3, the other at 12. The 3 year old (boy) had substantial reduction in symptons at puberty. The other (girl) is grown now, and still has random trouble during high pollen, or if she has a bad cold. Night time attacks, which often resulted in trips to emergency, ended when the kids started having a piece of fruit prior to bed time. I had read a study that suggested a drop in blood sugar corresponded to onset of late night asthma attacks.
I also enrolled the kids in the American Lung Association's biofeedback classes. It tought them to count their respirations, and how to relax to minimize the effects of stress on the attack.

There isn't a cure for Asthma. I have been living with it since I was born. The best you can do for him is talk to a doctor and make sure he gets his medication and stay away from his triggers. With time and luck maybe he will grow out of it (one of my sisters did).
