have one but no instructions. is there another filter as well as the one inside the machine? if so how do i get at it?

I suppose your dishwasher is jammed? I suppose some foreign obstacle has gone through the food filter (which is inside the machine) to the water pump and has blocked the wings from there and does not empty the machine. Am I right?
If not just ignore this answer. If yes, read a bit further. I just fixed my diswasher "Ariston" during the weekend. I had a serviceman visiting on Feb and watched like an eagle what the guy was doing since it was obvious that this would happen again (i.e. foreign obstacle gets into the water pump).

If you go and follow the Flickr -link on the same site and find the image "Dish Machine - Water Pump" you see the hot spot description on the procedure and the image of the machines inside. I guess it is roughly similar than yours.
