Okay heres what happened. I've been letting my natural hair color grow out for about a year and half and still had some medium red ends,my natural color is a little lighter then medium ash brown, but not quite light ash brown. I just wanted to get a color that would blend my natrual hair color and the red ends. I got some Natural Instints hair color. I thought I was being so safe with this stuff because it says that it will not give you roots and the color will wash out. I was using it for a while and it was doing exactly what I wanted, it was giving my natural color just a little bit of warm tones and it blended great with the red ends, I was not getting a root line because it wasn't changing my natural color enough to do that. I followed their directions every time. First time application was different then the root applications that followed. Anyways, last time I used this stuff, I had a huge surprise. It made my roots lighter then the rest of my hair and red.

I called the Clairol company and told them exactly how I applied it and everything. The girl I talked to said that Natural Instints does not have enough chemical in it to even lighten the hair like that and that it should not have done that. She said that I needed to darken my hair and then ask me if I wanted some coupons for a darker color. ( I was like WTF!) I said NO WAY! I will now have to go to a pro and have this fixed. I went to a salon and the stylist put on a demi color in a brown shade, that came out nice, she wanted to do subtle high lights, but I was to afraid. She said if there is any difference in color the high lights will break it up and you will not be able to tell. I don't want to cause myself anymore grief,so I was wondering if I should have her use a color close to the color she used, but in a permannent color and then do the high lights or should I stick with the demi and then do some high lights on the top? Thank you in advance.

I checked the box and bottle to make sure it was the right color. I timed it like I always have. Oh, the Clairol girl admitted that there was probably something wrong with their product and asked me for the # on the bottom of the box.

There are a few things that could have happened. You may have picked up the wrong color by accident. Or, THEY changed the color...believe me it happens. Maybe you left it on too long or not long enough? Anyway..I would give it a couple of days to see if it fades into the color you were happy with before if not...go to a professional ...you need help with the color now. Get a consultation with a hairstylist and see if you have a good understanding of what she wants to do with your hair. If it sounds like she knows what she's talking about then go with it.

I just read the added details of your problem, so now you have gone to a pro. You have to decide what kind of commitment you want to make for the maintenance of your hair now. She is right with the permanent color and highlights. The problem with the demi color and hi lights is one is demi and the other permanent.
Your demi color will fade out and the hilights will stay. You will get very dissappointed with the grow out of the demi color as it will look dull. You want the whole length of the hair to look fresh. It requires money and maintenance. If you have those I would go permanent with the color and do LOW lights which can be done with color instead of bleach. This way you CAN have the whole length of your hair freshened up with color and low lights as it fades.

Ok the girl from the company you talked to is full of the brown stuff. The reason your hair did what it did is this... when you colour your hair, you damage it. No matter what we use, we damage it. Your hair became more porous and it took on the base colour in the semi- permanent colour you bought. She knew this and she should have told you this. The other thing is that Natural Instincts is a natural/ metallic dye. It coats the hair hard and is almost impossible to get off. I agree with the lady that said cut it when your ready and start again, because as long as you have that hair, you may get a surprise 6 months from now if you try and bleach it and it either breaks off or turns orange. Don't play with it, get rid of it.
