Fed up of taking my bike in for a service and want to learn how to adjust the gears, take apart the bike and fix any problems

Start here. http://www.parktool.com/index.asp You can also check out your local college and see what type of interest courses they have. Sometimes they have bicycle maintenance classes. You can also check out your local bike shop an see if they run courses. See if they will take you on as an intern (work for free, or work for parts). Good luck. Its feels pretty good knowing you can fix your own bike.

Try Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance. You can get it on Amazon or at most local Bike Stores. Lot's of diagrams. well written.

Agree with Tom, Zinn's a great book. Also try www.parktools.com, they have some intresting stuff.
