in an all out war, who would win, USA or the UK?

ok, the battleground is in the usa and our staging area is canada, we can use the commonwealth if the countries wanted to or any allied force. America can use any allies they might be able to persuade (who???)

Naval battles would go to the US. The number, size and diversity of ships that the US has would make them the winner.

This would limit the UK from reaching US soil greatly. Unless the UK could get Canada or Mexico to allow them to use their country. I dought that very much. Plus they would be crazy to come over here. We have more guns than you can shake a stick at. UK would not be able to bring the fight to the US.

With amphib. and carriers protected by all the destroyers and subs the US could get to the UK. The destroyers use their artillary while the carriers launched round the clock bombers. The UK could put a major kink in the works as far as air to air and air to ship fights. With the bombing from the US they would not have anywhere to land when done.

The anphib. ships could roll AAV's and LCAT's w/tanks right in to the country side. This is where I think it would get sticky for the US. Like alwasy, the US sucks at MOUNT or Gorilla warfare. But again 20,000 AAV's and 5,000 Abrams would cleare the way for smaller/resupply convoys.

This would lead to a US victory.

But what is the point. The UK could simply buy a couple of politians in the US and get whatever they want.

On whose turf? There aren't enough people in Britain to invade America, and America has always struggled badly with invasion. Apparently, the Brits have the best pilots in the world so maybe they would win the aerial battles considering allot of new US fighter planes are unstable in dog fights (they would have to use there F14's to beat us) On the water the yanks would beat the UK hands down despite Britain's long history of Naval superiority. The US just has too many giant ships and nuclear subs.

Despite Americas well renowned, (supposed) superior firepower, I think they would underestimate the might of the British military. It would actually come down to who wanted to win the most and at the moment I see Britain as being in some sort of identity crisis at the moment where as Americans are very proud and patriotic, so I think they would win.

However, a war against the UK may be just the thing that unites the Brits together and a Britain united would be unstoppable.

Umm. Do we get the Commonwealth? And is this a world war or limited conflict. The arena would be important and the preparedness of the nations. In a surprise attack where we had armed/prepared/conscripted and the US had not we would probebly win as strategic planning can circumvent peace time preparedness even if there a gross advantage on one side.
Maybe for example if the US invaded the UK, we would have the good old war time spirit on our side, to say the least the UK would have one mean mother of a resistance force.
To be honest I could discuss this for a long time but without specific curcumstances for terrain and theatre its not possible to calculate succesfully, yo would probably need a supercomputer to hash out the variables.

Going by the last two world wars, The UK....simply because the USA wouldn't turn up on time! The 1st world war started in 1914....The Yanks didn't get there until 1917, & the 2nd world war began in 1939......they decided to show their faces at the END of 1941!!!!!!!!!!

The friendly fire answer is the best and how true. However you can never underestimate the underdog. Argentina should have won our little war but guess what the underdog came to the fore without USA help and won. My money would be on the UK, knowing how to use technology is better than having lots of it not doing any good.

We actually stopped planning for war against the US in the 1920's on the grounds that it would be such a futile proposition.

One US carrier group would cause the RAF immense problems. 2 would overwhelm it.

Its true that the average squaddie is of higher quality, but when you get to the US' numbers then quantity has a quality of its own.

this is unbelievable i do not believe in violence you do the maths. America is huge compared us UK there are men/women in America than UK. But the UK does have the motto just get the job done without any pussyfooting around. But America as so many secret agencies so they could do everything on the sly can't they. Basically i don't think you should think about this. Don't you realise Tony Blair is puppet compared to george bush.

Despite the US superior firepower they have struggled against such military powerhouses as: Vietnam, Iraq, Granada, Afghanstan etc.

Assuming the US don't play dirty and they keep the current command structure ie Bush CofS and Rumsfeld SofS Defense, I think we would have a better chance of embarrassing them any of the above.
