He doesnt just babble, he actually looks me in the eye and sometimes, by the inflection in his voice, it seems he is asking me questions. Is this unusual for a child his age?

He's asking, telling, talking, and everything under the sun. His little mind is so full of things right now. What he's done during the day, so much curiousness, telling you about it all.

Children younger than 1 can actually be taught to use sign language to communicate. Only short things like clasping their hand for bottle, tipping a clasped hand for telling you they want a drink.

He's asking you things, and he has no clue you can't understand him yet. Just keep talking to him, and listening :) Make a big deal out of his stories, or questions. Talk out loud to him when you do stuff in the house, like when you open the fridge say 'This is where we put the food, it keeps it cold' one day he'll shock you by blurting out 'cold' or 'fridge' lol when you least expect it >.<

Try asking him what he's saying also. Things like 'Are you telling mommy about the butterfly?' and make a flutter motion with your hands like a butterfly he just saw. Then tell him about the butterfly. Baby talk, just a whole new and amazing world. I love it.

Depends, what are some of the phrases he is saying: how many words? etc.
