isn't the knowledge of good and evil good. so why would god not adam and eve to eat from the tree?

I understand that it was a test, and that god knew all along that they would eat. My question revolves around the fact that god would forbid something in which is good in it?

22 Yahweh God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he put forth his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever..."

I'm going to skip all the theory on why the tree was there in the first place and just address the heart of the question. Remember we're not talking about ALL knowledge here. Scientific knowledge for example. The heart of the issue is knowledge of GOOD and EVIL. Or perhaps wisdom. Seen in THAT light, let's have a look at one of the wisest individuals of his time, and what he said about wisdom in the Bible itself...

"So I worked hard to distinguish wisdom from foolishness. But now I realize that even this was like chasing the wind. For the greater my wisdom, the greater my grief. To increase knowledge only increases sorrow."

-- Solomon, from the book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 1.

This isn't a biblical answer... and I don't have one.
I think outside the box, or the book, as the case may be.

Some people (myself included) believe that it was/would
be (hypothetically) a good thing, that it is grossely
misunderstood and/or misrepresented by the Jewish
and Christian dogma understandings.
Often I look at Christian Mythos (what I view the Bible to be)
through symbolic eyes, or through the eyes of the Mystic at least.
I'd say, think outside the box.
If we are at one with all things (Universe), then knowledge
of good and evil is merely awareness of our fractured
"self" exsistance as part of the whole. This knowledge
then is good and useful, but painful knowledge...
that feeling of seperation from "God", the trials and tribulations
of being an "individual"... but it is a necessairy pain,
for the betterment of the all, through Karmic progressive learning.

Just keep thinking, and searching...
and don't allow yourself to be pushed into accepting answers
that don't feel right. You contain the Divine Spark, and you
know Truth... it will resonate with you.

Blessings,
Lady A.

God forbids them to partake of the tree because it is not for man to decide what is good or evil. That belongs to God alone.

If man eats, then he'll be the judge of things and actions he considered good and evil. But that is not so, because God is the sole judge of what is good and what is evil.

That's why morality resides in God alone, and the Church is our guide to present what God judges as good or bad, not man.

This tree wasn't a tree of knowledge, there is nothing called
the tree of knowledge and God doesn't forbid knowledge because if he did there will be no science at all.It was a test for
their obedience. It is what all our life about.

You're not understanding the tree right. The tree represented God's right as creator to decide for humans what was good and evil. But they wanted to decide that for themselves.

God did not want us to be able to do evil acts as he wanted us to be perfect. but he gave us free will which would come in handy for coosing whether to do good or evil. he forbad adam and eve to partake of that tree for whatever reason was suffitient to him.

the real question you should ask is: if god knows all, and can predict the future, then why did he plant the tree in the first place? he KNEW they would eat from it.

I think God knew they would probably eat from it. He allowed Satan to tempt Eve...God had a plan for this world long before He created it. He knew He'd send jesus for us too....that is how it was able to be prophesied.

actually once you postulate an all-knowing, all-powerful, benevolent god (as the christian god is supposed to be), then evil is impossible

the whole of concept of christianity is logically flawed
