If my children were nihilists like me, christians would say that I had forced or coerced them to be so. But this is never said of christian families, why?

I think this about many Christian families actually, especially in my area. I live practically in the shiny gold buckle of the bible belt. Northeast Mississippi. It is definitely the norm here to be Christian. I think the people here aren't real Christians. They are what I call Christian by default. They didn't come to this truth after thinking about it and other possibilities for years and years. They just accept it because it is all they have ever known. I think this is much more likely to happen with more "accepted" religions such as Christianity mainly because there aren't as many people trying to "convert" Christians.

If your children are nihilists, they will have disregarded many other versions of the truth throughout their lifetimes because inevitable every Christian and his brother will try to shove religion down their throats.

This isn't said of Christian families often because Christians like to think that Christianity is the natural choice, and their children would have chosen it anyway. I think many Christians are more concerned with having a faith that looks unbreakable than a faith that IS unbreakable.

Personally, since I'm not sure what I believe, I want to encourage my children to be "truth seekers." I want to take them to many churches and meetings of different faiths and let them decide what they feel is the truth. I don't care if they think 144,000 people will end up in heaven of if they think we're ruled by glittery lizards, as long as they have sought the truth that they can accept and are happy with it.

Woa! Hang on!

I don't know what nihilism is, but no, I would not, nor would most Christians, feel that you forced them to be so. You teach your children what you believe, that is parenting. There may be extreme cases where this can be said, for both Christians and non-Christians alike, but in general, no one is going to accuse you of "forcing" your beliefs on your children simply because they adopted your beliefs.

You also say this is never said of Christian families... Have you turned on your television lately? This is happening all the time.

First of all because there are more of them. Sucks but there are. It seems to break down into a simple yes or no argument. Their child was filled with the love of christ and went that way for that reason. Your child had more sense. Both answers are completely true to the respective parties but there is no proof either way. An anthropology professor once asked me if believing in evolution was an acceptable substitute for religion. The words believing and substitute got me.

its because they assume that your religion isnt the right one and theirs is. That you either closeted your children from "salvation" or that they wanted to be christian and you just said NO. Christians believe that since they are continuously saying how "horrible" other religions are that their children have chosen out of their own will..

they don't like the truth, lol. Ppl change their beliefs to suit themselves, they only see what they want to see. A christian raising their child christian will see it as good parenting and loving their child, but they will see what u are doing as stealing ur child from god and sending it to hell, yeah it's stupid but there is nothing we can do but ignore them.

because if you disagree with christians, they ALWAYS WIN. it's like some freaky conspiracy or something

but seriously, that is an interesting observation. especially because i've seen a few atheists on here saying that they rejected their family's imposition of religion on them, but haven't seen any theists saying anything about rejecting imposed atheism.......

it's a double standard. christians tend to think of themselves as perfect, therefore the same "wrongs" that we do to our children couldn't possibly be similar to their "practices." it's really annoying, but that's the way the world works.

their minds are very one-sided on a lot of things, but actually you do in a way force your opinions on kids because your opinions matter more to them than other people.
