We've had our amazon parrot for about two years now; we found him in a tree outside our house and no one claimed him so we kept him. Never could figure out how old he was.

Unfortuately, you can't. Birds look the same until they die of old age. They don't have distinguishing features like dogs, cats and horses do.
Find a bird vet. You want someone really experienced with birds. They may be able to tell you.
And by the way, Score!! Lucky you for finding such a valuable, expensive bird. And tame enough to catch, can't beat that.

In most cases, you can't tell. Really old birds develop arthritis and may slow down and sleep more, but besides that, there's no way of telling. Younger birds may not be as bright and their feathers may not have grown in completely. Double headed amazons and blue fronts get more color as they age and sometimes attain their full color by the time they're in their teens.

There is no true way to tell the age of a bird unless the breeder taged the date of birth on a leg band.
