I don't refer to latin america as brown and I don't refer to the us as white. I've known of quite light latin americans and also quite brown americans. I don't even think "white" americans are really the majority any longer. It's not an issue for me, at all.

Not all of us in the U.S.A. refer to Latin America as "brown." Some people in the U.S. refer to people as how they see them on T.V, or by the few Latin Americans they know. Until I started to travel I begin to realize that a Cuban could be black, a Mexican could be white, and a person from the Dominican Republic isn't alway's mixed. Sorry to ramble, I guess what I'm saying is some of us refer to you as brown because alot of Latin American countries are racially mixed and that's the only image we see on T.V.

I agree with joe mama up to "Brown countries are the ones Spain had the misfortune of colonizing and spreading Catholicism to"... up to there, it's all good... But well to answer your question, the answer is IGNORANCE, americans are ignorants like no other. They think it's funny when they find out mexico is actually called mexican united states, and they think it's wrong when they consider themselves Americans (they were actually born in america too... the whole continent is called that way!) they are not from the US, but americans anyway. Ignorance also causes them to think that every mexican or guatemalan or whatever, is a dark skinned guy who rides burros... when in fact, there are a guge amount of whites in mexico due to the spaniards, french, and later jewish people who migrated there... I don't consider racist calling latin american countries brown though, cause in majority... that's the way it goes, it's just a descriptive term... just as most americans are mutts...

Actually it's usually only latino people who refer to themselves as a group as "brown". I live in California, so trust me, I know.
I haven't really heard anyone call latinamerican countries "brown" countries and the US a "white" country, but who knows... there's always gonna be some people out there that generalize everything by race and color.

I never have. They're just other countries. I had a friend in high school who was Brazilian. She was very much white, though her hair was dark brown (dyed blonde) and she had brown eyes. And she was cool as hell, because she liked the almighty Pink Floyd.
And I don't think the US is a "white" country, either. It's just a country.
