tty can refer to many things: bye, or talk to you soon, or talk later, or later, or ciao, or goodbye or busy or something to end a conversation temporarily and resume later.

umm i think its used in AIM and i think that your friend made a typo. it either means "thank you" (ty) or "talk to you later" (ttyl)
