I was thinking swimming, but I'm not sure. I need to lose weight, not gain muscle, so I figured a cardio workout, but I can't do running because it's puts some strain on my knees.

You are 100% right, swimming is the one!

Even better if the water is a little chilly.Your body will turn up the "furnace" to offset the temperture difference.
The fuel for the furnace is body fat!

Go Swimming! and Get Lean!!

Try working out in the pool. The water will take the pressure off the knees and you get a double workout because of the resistence that the water provides. You might be able to find an aqua aerobics class in your area.

That was a really stupid question. Almost all exercises are going to be a little painful. I mean think about the phrase "No Pain. No Gain." So in truth swimming may be easier but all in all any workouts going to hurt, but it will be worth it in the end.

Swimming is a great idea for calorie burning. Ever heard of Micheal Phelps? 7000+ calories a day just to keep himself at his lean weight. Also, eliptical machines are very low impact running machines.

Water workouts, whether or not you swim. Join a water aerobics class to get started -- they're great, and will rapidly build your aerobic endurance without hurting your knees. My husband has lousy knees, and he really enjoys his classes.
