There are state boarding schools but the most prestigious schools are the independent ones.

I personally don't know of a single government boarding school in the UK. Most public schools but most boarding schools (Eton, Harrow, Winchester) are independent (private) schools, some of them founded as charitable institutions. I know that the Duke of York's Royal Military School (ages 11+) offer subsidized fees for children of service families and there are more schools like that, but that is probably not what you are looking for.

A good place to start looking would be The Good Schools Guide they offers detailled info on different schools and will give you a good start. They also have a website:

http://www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk

Another site is: http://www.isc.co.uk/

Good luck!

There have NEVER been any government boarding schools.

Back in 1970's and 1980's by Uncle worked in Africa. He had to send his 2 daughters to a Private, Fee Paying, Boarding School during term time. During the short holidays - like half term - his mother-in-law (my gransmother) had the girls to stay with her. The girls only went out to Africa during the summer and at Christmas.

sorry, all boarding schools are "public" which means you pay a fortune. The only truly state owned boarding schools are those for unruly children, like borstals and childrens homes. Childrens homes are the boarding school of choice for the low income family.

As far as I know we have none. All our government owned schools are regular ones, you turn up, do your lessons and leave.

The only schools which offer boarding are private and require annual fees.

Admission to State Boarding Schools in the UK is limited to children who are nationals of the UK and are eligible to hold a full UK passport, or those who are nationals of other European Union countries or those who have the right of residence in the UK. The holding of a BN(O) passport does not make the child eligible for a State Boarding School in the UK.
