that at some point my jaw gets mis-aligned and kind of locks and I have to angle it a certain way and slowly test it to see if I'm gonna be able to open it again . . .?

Like I'll be eating and then at some point it's like just opening I am about to break or dislocate the joint.

My guess is that when I had braces . . the orthodontist would make me hold my mouth so WIDE OPEN when he was working that I have trouble keeping it in the socket sometimes . . .Like I guess that the jaw joint is lax.

This makes me scared to go on dinner dates or places where I might be eating and this could happen. It's happened a number of times by myself in Mexican restaurants where they serve nachos as the appetizer on the table before you get your entre.

It's happened with my family out to eat and at home sometimes . . though we don't eat a lot of chips/nachos.

It's pretty much just with nachos, heavy chips . . maybe tacos . . anything where I open my mouth wide and then chew down.

Oh . . i think it happened with a subway sandwich once or twice . . I know that I at least had some problems there once.

This really sucks . . and I can't imagine how I could fix it w/o risky painful slow recovering surgery.

I guess the only answer is to avoid the foods that cause the problem.

I remember the ortho. and his nurse being shocked when he told me to bite down . . . to test my bite alignment I guess . . and I could bite two ways. I said,"Which way? I can bite this way . .and I can bite this way?" The looks on their faces. Should I have been able to sue? Certainly too late now. Do you think he felt bad? I hope so. Didn't he know that he was asking me to hold my mouth open too wide?!

I don't even know if I needed braces. From all the pictures it didn't look like my teeth were even that crooked. Geesh.

Oh, also . . I wore one of those head-bands for buck teeth for about a year . . That could have been THE cause or part of the cause.

Do you think that those head gear things are orthodontically beneficial? Do you think that they just mess up the integrity and tightness of the joint.

It wasn't just that I was holding it open wide it was that I was also shifting around my lower jaw for wherever he was working in my mouth, . . because he had such big hands and the price you would pay if he couldn't tell what he was doing or couldn't get in there enough to see or to do his job easily . . he would really hurt you.

He was sued later by someone and went out of business.

I just think that maybe only women should be ortho.s because they have smaller hands and women are always more dextrous . . barring certain exceptions. What do you think?

His son was the star football player in middle school . . they were rich . . now I know only rich because the father probably took as many patients as he could and man handled all of them carelessly just so his family could earn good money and his kid could have the opportunities that foster being able to be popular . .and have the time resources and self-esteem to play sports . . while he, the father was abusing adolescent patients who just thought that this was part of the pain they had heard of that is inherent to or comes with getting braces put on and adjusted.

I just thought he had to be right and be competent and all because of WHO his son was. Ha, ha. I am an adult now . . and know quite different. A lot of Italians in the particular town where I grew up . . just were bitter and sore about money and status issues and so didn't give a F about hurting paople along the way to getting it for the first time or a relatively new time for their families. Economic comfort was new

Maybe it is the way you eat them either your being to cautious and causing it or you are to eager and chomp down on them harder because you are awake that they are more crunchy. Try to eat it as if it were anything else you still have to chew them the same it's just more phycological when it come to something crunchy so try to not adjust and be afraid when you eat this should help you out alot!

That used 2 happen to me too. It could be TMJ- a jaw alignment condition. Go see your dentist. My mom has TMJ and she wears a mouth guard @ night to help control it. Feel better!

I think I have had this when I was late teens or so and it disappeared with no treatment. Since it is debilitating for you, maybe you should talk to a doctor. Til then, avoid problem foods of course.

And you didn't go back to that orthodontist? Take some x-ray or something. What if your jaw bone grew in some wacky way.
