First off, my dog is 6 yrs old. His is an inside dog and rarely goes outside except for the obvious bathroom breaks and play time which is usually 20-30 mins at a time @ 3 times per day.He is not around any other animals except for my other dogs who are also not around any other animals.
Ok, my dog started to cough two days ago. My brother came over and when he knocked on the door and my dog got excited and started to bark with his dog food inside his mouth still. He "choked" and coughed for about 2 mins. He was then fine. However, now he has been coughing ever since that night. He doesn't cough all the time except when he tries to bark or run. He has no obstructions in the throat nor is his stomach bloated, ect. He eats and drinks just fine. He shows no other ill effects. He is still himself. So my question is, do you think he just scratched his throat? Can this happen? Of course I start to worry and think the worst as if it is heartworm. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Im not a veterinarian by any means but i have 3 dogs and do a lot of research about medical problems they have and things like that. People can also do this too because my grandfather had to have surgury because of it but anyways, it may be he inhaled a piece of food and its now sitting in his lung. Of course the body is trying to reject it which is why hes couphing all the time but by the time its in the lung its very difficult to get back up. If you dont take him to a vet, the food will rot in his lung making all kinds of bacteria and infection and can ultimatly lead to his death. I would take him to the doctor as soon as possible. especially since its been going on for a few days now.

One thing you want to look at is the breed. If it is a trechealsephalic dog or a toy dog then it could be a collapsed trachea (in other words if it is a toy breed - like a chi - or a smushed nosed dog like a bulldog - then the breathing pipe may have folded in on itself) If the dog has trouble breathing, get to the vet immediately. If it is just coughing, call your vet and talk to him. Usually it will right itself in time. Sometimes for severe cases there is a surgery they can do. You may also want to go from a collar to a harness so there is no pressure on the throat. My son has a chi that has this problem. It usually shows up when he gets over excited or when is is pulling on a collar.

The food that you swallow travels down your throat and is pushed by contractions of the muscular esophagus. In the area where the esophagus joins the stomach a valve-like mechanism, known as lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is located. The closure of this muscle prevents stomach acid from backing up, or refluxing, into the esophagus. LES malfunction is the first factor that causes and contributes to gastro-esophageal reflux disease. In a healthy individual, the LES relaxes only when food passes from the esophagus into the stomach. After the food passes into the stomach, the valve shuts off, keeping the stomach content and acid inside. However, when the LES is weak and doesn't close properly, acid can splash up into your throat causing painful burning sensation, called heartburn.

I'm not sure exactly what's wrong, he could have Kenel cough but the following should be very helpfull:
Some common causes of coughing and gagging include foreign objects in the airway, bronchitis, bacterial pneumonia, heart disease, laryngeal paralysis, fungal infections, reflux esophagitis (similar to heartburn in people), food allergies, parasites, tumors, and other diseases. Environmental factors such as exposure to cigarette smoke, new perfumes, or new bedding or carpeting can also aggravate coughing.

For mild episodes, massaging your dog's throat may help lessen the symptoms. In difficult cases, I recommend getting a second opinion from a board-certified specialist in veterinary internal medicine.

Did u see the food come out? Then he could still have it stuck.. Or his throat is irritated from having that stuck.. Either way, You really need to have the vet look at it. Unless you have an xray machine in your house, there is NO WAY to tell if it is out or still in there

Perhaps he still has something caught in his throat. You should check it out with either a vet or someone, I dunno. Take a flashlight if you can and look and see. Maybe there's a tiny peice that you cannot see. Consult with a veterinarian if any problems occur withing 2 days.
