It is not good to feed ur dog canned food all the time. Get a dry dogfood for small dogs and the pieces are very small the chihuaha should do fine.

If he is a pup, he may need to be on soft food for awhile. I feed my pups puppy food soaked in warm water until it gets soft. Sometimes I give them a little canned Purina Pro Plan. They love it and it is a good food. When they eat soft food, the stool is softer. A Chihuahua pup will not eat much. Maybe half a cup at most. You should leave the dry food out for the pup all day, because a Chihuahua pup is prone to low blood sugar. He will start eating the dry soon.

Feed hard food. Soft food will cause tooth decay. If he is having trouble, go to a smaller bite food or you can chop it up in your food processor. My son has a chi and can eat the same food that my shelties do. I start my shelties on hard food at 7 weeks and only feed the soft food from 5-6 weeks. Nutro makes a really good food for small dogs. Bil-jac dry food is easy to chew as well.

It may be because the nuggets are too big. Some dog foods now sell food specifically made for small dogs. A lot of foods, especially the cheap ones, still use only big nuggets and obviously a small dog would have trouble chewing these big pieces of food. I have a small dog that had the same problem and as soon as i switched to a small nugget food, she ate just fine. Iams and Science Diet are a couple of brands that make small nuggets but if you go to petsmart or petco or any kind of good pet store, there are ALOT of brands to chose from that offer small nuggets.

Could there be a reason your little dog is having a hard time chewing? Maybe a visit to your vet is needed to do a dental check-up. Small dogs often have trouble with baby teeth not coming in correctly, which sometime causes pain later on. Try adding water to the hard food, and letting it sit for a while until it is partially softened, then pour out excess water. My tiny yorkie/maltese prefers her food partially soft. I give her this food in the morning, and then put out a small bowl of hard food for her to munch on during the day. Try it, he might like it...

Hard food is better for his teeth. While soft food can be higher in protien and other nutrients. I would recomend giving him both. Leave kibble out during the day for him to nibble if he gets hungry and offer canned food in the evenings. That way he gets the best of both worlds.
Go to naturapet.com for more info on dog nutrition. They also put out one of the best foods on the market today.
Good Luck and give the little guy a smooch from me.

hard food are better to avoid dental problems.
How much? depends on the manufacturers recommendations
you can put water on the hard food to soften it a bit but first and foremost:
Go to your local vet and get your dogs teeth checked, he should not have trouble chewing, there might be something wrong.
When you are there ask about recommended food for your dog.

If he has problems chewing dry food, give him some big meaty bones to chew everyday, it will help clean his teeth and if they're big, he has no hope of biting any bone off and getting it stuck somewhere in his digestive tract.
