Get some Orabase, not Orajel. It creates a film over the sore and that helps with the pain. You can also brush your teeth and swish with mouthwash. That will kill the bacteria. Orajel and Ambesol don't work for canker sores because they wear off in a matter of minutes. You need something that will create a film over the area that acts like a shield. It helps with the pain longer. I get canker sores all the time.

Awesome trick: Take a plain aspirin (no Tylenol, Aleve, or Motrin) and put it on the sore.

Let the Aspirin fall apart and such, and try to keep the aspirin on the sore as much as possible while it dissolves.

The Aspirin will act as a local anaesthetic and completely kill the pain.

btw: The Orabase answer is very true. Finding something that covers the sore and stays there even when it gets wet from saliva is the best long term solution to the pain.

oooh. I get these all the time and it's not due to poor dental hygene btw. I have a vitamin deficiency, which i now take a multiple vitamin and don't get them hardly anymore. What i had was the proper gel you can get for them it's only a small tube and heaps expsensive $12AUD for a small tube. It numbs the pain. You've never truely had it bad with canker sores until you get like 3 at once painful as. Especially on your lip.

Salt Water makes the pain worser btw. Try the gel it works way better.

Oh that sucks. I hate canker sores with passion. What I always do is constantly rinse it with water+salt. The salt is good at getting rid of germs. You can add a little baking soda too.
Then in addition to that I do lime juice+salt, and also mouthwash like a million times.
And then put on one of those over-the-counter medicines for canker sores.
Take some ibuprofen for the pain if you can take it.
It'll go away, don't worry.

I tend to get those from time to time. I've tried everything everyone else has suggested as well. A few other things you may add to the list to try..... 1. Hold a chewable Tums similar type of Antacid against it with your tongue. It soothes it and lasts a while. Seems to make it heal faster. 2. If you have a sympathetic doctor, ask him for a lidocaine gel. Prescription strength orajel, it ROCKS! 3. Last but CERTAINLY not least, this is the last ditch effort and always works...Vicodin for the pain and a frozen Margarita until the drugs and alcohol combine their magic and knock you out cold!

Anbesol like the first person said. But to get rid of it, rinse your mouth twice a day with Listerine. It stings at first, then numbs, and eventually it gets rid of it. (I swear this works) In the meantime, stay away from salty, abrasive foods (like potato chips) and soda. These can make canker sores worse and cause more to occur (along with stress).

this will hurt like hell for a second but it works for me... swish some listerine in your mouth (making sure to swish over the sore) for a few seconds... I think it kills the bacteria making the sore painful and helps it heal. Mine have always gone away the next day if I do it before bed.

Don't mess around with home remedies. Call your dentist and get a PRESCRIPTION for Aphthasol paste (pronounced AP-thi-sol). It is the only prescription treatment specifically for canker sores. Your dentist can tell you all about it, but it really works.

there is a medicine at most drug stores. It is a powder and honestly it stings bad. But it will get rid of it quickly. Start taking vitamins, they are usually caused by a lack of the proper vitamin. Watch what your drinking and eating, this can increase your chances of gettng one. also, listerine helps with the pain, or chloroseptic spray.
