I have had hair past my waist. Key word, HAD. It's completely a pain in the butt. I was using my hair as a front. People didn't see me, all they saw was my HAIR! Yes it was lovely, but ask yourself if it's really worth the clogged drains, constant vaccuming, nighttime strangles and all the effort!!!

But here's how it's done. Step Number one...you ready? It's really hard...

Don't cut your hair.

I know, I know, it sounds as though I'm making fun of you. But take if from the former Cousin IT. It is the God's honest truth. Truely, swear off barbers, hairstylists, all that. Not even a liitle "trim" to weed out the "split ends." No, no, no, just don't do it. Think of all the money you will save! Start a bank account for your plumming expenses.

Step Number Two: No styling products, no mouse, no gel. None of that crap. Start investing in fun hair accessories and get used to working with your hair. Styling products no matter how "urban friendly" they are still have alcohols and goos that make your hair brittle. Have a problem with frizz? Take a bit of Olive oil rub it in your hands and then run your oiled fingers through your hair. Have tangles? Spray a bit of olive oil on the tangle and gently comb through it starting at the bottom and working up.

Step number three: Do you see a pattern forming? Olive Oil, Olive Oil, Olive Oil is Popeye's girlfriend and your best friend. A little goes a long way. Use it as directed and additionally, once a week slather your hair liberably with oil until it's completely coated, dripping, googy even. Wrap it in a towel then sleep. The next day wash out the oil. Very nice results. Try it, you'll like it.

Number four: Don't skimp on Shampoos or brushes. Personally, I like Aveda for both. They are not cheap, and there is a reason for it.

Number five: Toss out the blowdrier...okay, well maybe not, use the drier, curling iron, and any other heat devices only for very special occasions. Hair that long needs creativity. That means, braids, buns, and do's oh my.

Number six: Be gentle with your hair. Do not brush it while wet. Here is what I did, I brushed it BEFORE I washed it. Then with the aid of a little (very little) olive oil on the tangles I took a comb (not to be mistaken with a brush) and combed through it while still wet.

At one time in my life, I was an actor...and my hair sometimes worked for me, and sometimes not. Once it was dyed black for a part in a play and it took five bottles to get the job done. I was much more popular without all that hair.

But you are not me. Good Luck. Don't cut your hair.

i had a "bob" until i was 17 and i wanted my hair past my waist. Now at 23 i have it... the secret? Trim your hair EVERY MONTH, but don't cut length. i know this sounds silly, but if you trim JUST THE ENDS off, you trick the hair into thinking that you cut length, so it tries to grow it back. I call it a "no sweep haircut" meaning u literally have nothing to sweep off the floor, but you did cut your hair. Do this and i promise your hair will grow at least a full face length in a year. Those shampoos and stuff don't work, they just coat your hair and make it LOOK better.
