my mom has a M60 ammo box (empty of course) and i was just wondering if the M60 machine gun was used in the vietnam war. the box is marked "200 CARTRIDGES, 7.62 MM, NATO M82, CARTONS, -o-o- (<--- supposed to be ammo links), M13" and on top it is marked M60". anything you can tell me about this would be very helpful. anything about the vietnam war, from guns to events, any websites?

I think it was. It was probably the kind they used in the doors of helicopters used to drop or evac troops.
There is a good description at the site below.
Up until maybe 10 years ago, military stuff like that was available in Army Surplus stores.
My unit was a headquarters half way up the coast of South Vietnam. We dealt with troop movements, artillery placements, etc.
The French had occupied Viet Nam before the U.S. Prior to the French, legend had it that the Chinese invaded the Viet Nam penninsula, killing or driving out many of the original inhabitants. The town I was in had been used as a resort by the French. It had beautiful white beaches and great sea food. We swam in the ocean every chance we could.
We also experienced a lot of rain, monsoons. I remember on one stormy day, looking from the barracks to the ocean. The rain was coming down so hard you could not tell where the ocean ended and the land began.
I did not go to Vietnam because I supported the war. I was really curious about what was happening. Being 19, I did not think anything could really hurt me. And with the draft, if you were not wealthy, you were likely to go anyway.

Yes, it was very effective..... it also drew enemy fire when the machine gunner opened up. I carried one for 6 months, it weighed about 23 1/2 pounds, a folded olive drab towel helped between the sling and shoulder. The assistant gunner carried a spare barrel and asbestos gloves to handle hot barrels, and more ammo. It had an effective range of about 1100 yards, every fifth round was a tracer.
I have forgotten the rate of fire, high enough to make the barrel very hot.
